Job summary : This is responsible work in the operation and maintenance of the marina facility. An employee in this class is responsible for the day-to-day administration of municipal dockage and watercraft fueling facilities. The employee is responsible for seeing that work is performed according to established procedures. Supervision is received from an off-site superior who makes assignments and reviews work by personal observation and oral reports.

Essential job functions and responsibilities :

  • Accepts applications for boat dockage, discusses boater's needs and fuels boats.
  • Keeps records and prepares comprehensive reports related to marina activities.
  • Distributes material and / or messages or notices to boat owners.
  • Maintains the marina area, ensures cleanliness of marina and calls public works for assistance in lawn care and / or other facility maintenance service.
  • Keeps the general area free of hazards and debris.
  • Oversees and participates in the repairs facilities of a minor nature.
  • Must effectively and positively represent the City in delivering and performing work with colleagues and clients, irrespective of gender, race, religion, age, disability, political affiliation or belief, or sexual orientation.
  • Must establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors and managers.
  • Performs related work as required for this position description only.

The Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Education / experience :

Graduation from high school or GED, successful completion of a Coast Guard boating safety course, plus six (6) months of experience at a dockage facility. Preferred : one (1) year experience at a dockage facility. Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

  • Valid driver's license : with proof of automobile insurance
  • Background check : must have an acceptable background record
  • Driving abstract : must have an acceptable driving record
  • Knowledge, skills, abilities :

  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance requirements of docks and ancillary facilities.
  • Knowledge of nautical terms and marine customs.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principals and practices.
  • Knowledge of federal customs and immigration laws.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to regulate docking activities at a municipal berthing facility.
  • Ability to handle a variety of boats in an emergency situation.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, berthing patrons and the public.
  • Ability to maintain an effective record-keeping system.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, managers, and the public.
  • Knowledge of computers with Windows 95 environment and marine-oriented finance software. (Word, Excel).
  • Ability to swim.
  • Physical demands :

    Work environment :

    Work involves moderate to heavy physical activity in an outdoor setting under all types of weather conditions with the added exposure to insects, animals and other hazards.

    The Examination

    Required education and background information : look over the announcement carefully to determine your eligibility. Please note minimum education and experience requirements. Evidence of a GED test score is required if submitted for high school diploma. Veteran's preference : an eligible veteran who enters an open-competitive examination shall receive preference points added to the total passing score earned in the examination as provided for in the Florida Statutes. To obtain veteran's preference, candidates must submit a copy of separation papers (DD214) and meet eligibility requirements as stipulated by the Florida Statutes.

    Additional Information

    All successful applicants will be required to pass an extensive background which may include criminal history searches, driving history checks, credit report, courthouse searches, education verification, employment verification, professional license verification, or other search methods as deemed necessary for the position. In addition, the applicant will be required to undergo a medical examination, which may include a drug screening, prior to appointment. Applicants who are considered for employment will be required to pay $55.00 for the background investigation. Employment of relatives : The City of Hollywood has an ordinance which regulates the employment of relatives of City employees. Effective January 28, 2008, a relative may only be hired under the following additional conditions : the relative must have competed in an appropriate examination process as determined by Human Resources and be placed on a civil service eligibility list; the relative must be among the top three ranked candidates available on the certified eligibility list unless expanded by the Civil Service Board; the Department or Office Director and the Director, Human Resources must demonstrate that it is in the best interests of the City of Hollywood to hire the relative of a public officer or employee. As of 12 / 15 / 2005 the City will require all newly hired employees to sign an affidavit affirming non-usage of tobacco or tobacco products within the last year prior to submission of application and will continue to be a non-user of tobacco products throughout employment with the City of Hollywood.
