About The College / Unit / Department

The University of Georgia is establishing a new independent School of Medicine in Athens, building on the success of the Augusta University / University of Georgia Medical Partnership, which has been educating physicians in Athens since 2010.

The establishment of a new public medical school at UGA comes as the state faces a significant shortage of medical professionals. The population of Georgia, the nation’s eighth largest state, has surged to approximately 11 million residents, straining existing medical infrastructure and resulting in longer wait times for appointments and reduced access to care. Georgia currently ranks 40th in the nation for the number of active patient care physicians per capita and 41st for the number of public medical students per capita.

As a top 20 public university with a thriving research enterprise and vast public service network, the University of Georgia is well positioned to produce more highly trained physicians, alleviate physician shortages, and improve the state’s ability to provide quality health care for its citizens.

The School of Medicine is located on UGA’s Health Sciences Campus in Athens, home to UGA’s College of Public Health and the current AU / UGA Medical Partnership. In its inaugural year, the UGA School of Medicine plans to enroll 60 students per class, but a new $100 million medical school building will enable the UGA School of Medicine to grow to 120 students per class in the future.

The University of Georgia School of Medicine is seeking accreditation and has been formally recognized with “candidate status” by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), beginning a multi-year accreditation process.

Position Summary

The Clinical Information Librarian enhances health sciences education, research, and patient care at the University of Georgia School of Medicine (UGA SOM). This full-time, non-tenure track faculty role focuses on sustaining the new UGA School of Medicine’s medical educational mission through the planning, development, delivery, and evaluation of quality health information and instruction.

The Clinical Information Librarian plays a crucial role in improving healthcare and patient care by equipping faculty, residents, and students with the knowledge and skills to find and evaluate evidence-based information for clinical decision-making, research, and professional development. This position serves as a member of the residency training team with partnering hospitals and UGA SOM library team, enhancing medical student learning to build a solid foundation for success in the clinical setting.

Key responsibilities include providing information services for the UGA SOM in Graduate Medical Education and Undergraduate Medical Education. Primary duties include leading and coordinating educational programs, scholarship, teaching and learning. The Clinical Information Librarian is expected to allocate their time equally between Graduate Medical Education and Undergraduate Medical Education.

As a member of the School of Medicine team, the Clinical Information Librarian reports directly to the Director of the UGA School of Medicine Library with a close working relationship with the UGA Libraries faculty.

The position is a non-tenure track faculty appointment at the rank of Librarian II, Librarian III, or Librarian IV commensurate with experience.

    Relevant / Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, And / or Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree in the sciences or demonstrated interest in library research in the sciences.
  • Evidence of meeting university standards in librarianship, teaching, scholarship, and service, in accordance with faculty standing.

    • Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities And / or Competencies

  • Knowledge in health information resources and services (e.g., PubMed, UptoDate, ClinicalKey).
  • Background in working with health professional faculty, students, and / or clinicians.
  • Ability to develop instruction sessions and to instruct users effectively both individually and in the classroom and / or clinical settings.
  • History of creating or strong interest in designing instructional support materials in various formats.
  • Expertise in teaching evidence-based medicine topics, including the ability to develop and deliver educational programs that enhance information literacy and support evidence-based healthcare practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to efficiently manage and implement multiple projects and priorities, ensuring timely and successful completion of tasks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Strong collaborative planning and problem-solving abilities, with a proven track record of working effectively with teams to achieve goals.
  • Proficiency with LibGuides or similar tools for creating online research guides.
  • Familiarity with citation management software.
  • Understanding of the academic health care environment and the library’s role within it.

    Duties / Responsibilities

  • Lead educational programs to provide instruction on information literacy, evidence-based healthcare, and curriculum-related activities in Graduate Medical Education (GME) and Undergraduate Medical Education (UME) for faculty and learners.
  • Coordinate programs to deliver instruction and information for clinical Graduate Medical Education activities for UGA SOM-sponsored residency programs.
  • Serve as a faculty instructor for academic half days, teaching evidence-based information topics in collaboration with the UGA SOM Library team.
  • Participate in clinical rounds and reports with faculty, residents and students, including finding evidence-based information at the point of care.
  • Assist faculty and residents in preparing evidence for clinical review sessions such as morbidity and mortality sessions, journal club, or seminars.
  • Equip faculty, residents, and medical students to locate and organize relevant information for patient care and scholarly activities.
  • Collaborate with the UGA SOM library team to provide instruction for faculty, staff, and students on teaching, research, and learning information needs.
  • Work collaboratively with medical faculty, residents, and students in their scholarly activities, including grant and manuscript submissions, and research consultations.
  • Navigate technology needs such as mobile applications and online reliable health information platforms.
  • Answer reference questions via phone, email, and remote access.
  • Provide consultations, assistance and instruction both in person and virtually, including for complex queries.
  • Participate in working groups, campus programs, and committees as assigned.
  • Be active professionally in local, regional, and / or national associations and contribute to the professional literature.
  • Maintain flexibility and assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
