Description DAYS AND HOURS WILL VARY (10-12 HOURS PER WEEK)

Under general supervision, performs a variety of responsible complex sub-professional library work; provides general information and assistance to the public; participates in the activities of a specialized library function; and performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Library Director or Librarian I / II. Exercises no supervision over staff, but may provide technical or functional direction to clerical staff and volunteers.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry-level class in the Library Assistant series and primarily performs duties and activities related to library materials processing, sorting, shelving, and retrieving. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence.

Positions at the I level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience Examples of Duties

Performs circulation work, including checking materials in and out of the Library, maintaining circulation statistics, processing returned materials and preparing them for reshelving utilizing the library automation system. Processes billing related to lost materials and overdue books; accepts and receives payments for overdue or lost materials and maintains related records utilizing the library automation system. Sorts books, cards, and related materials according to alphabetical, numerical, and categorical systems; collects, stacks, shelves, and reshelves library materials. Processes library card applications and issues library cards; maintains records of current patron information utilizing the library automation system. Receives, researches, and responds to patrons' reference requests; locates and provides requested materials and information; assists and instructs patrons in the proper use of library equipment and reference sources including internet, electronic databases, and other technology devices. Reserves library materials and notifies patrons of their availability; initiates and processes inter-library loan requests. Performs basic cataloging of books and related library materials. Monitors the condition of books and materials and performs necessary binding and repairs. Assists with the development of library collections, including ordering, purchasing, distribution and use of books and other materials in area(s) of specialization; reviews and recommends the acquisition of new materials for the Library's collection; identifies materials to be removed from the collection. Prepares library exhibits and displays. Assists with library programming, including conducting classes, clubs, and special events. Participates in community events and outreach activities. Prepares signs, fliers, pathfinders, booklists, and other customer aides. Assists in the development of a variety of library-related literature-based and educational programs and activities. Participates in meetings, committees, or projects intended to enhance services or promote consistent policies and procedures across the department. Participates in professional meetings, workshops, and conferences and continuing education programs as appropriate. May exercise functional and technical supervision over assigned library clerical, part-time, and volunteer personnel. Assists in ensuring the proper maintenance and use of Library equipment. Library Assistant II's may substitute for Senior Library Assistants running a branch to cover vacations, illness, etc. Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications

Library Assistant I :

Accurately sort and organize library materials using alphabetical or numerical classification systems. Retrieve, shelve and relocate library materials. Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public. Use English effectively to communicate orally and in writing. Understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy, procedural, and legal guidelines. Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records. Access, retrieve, enter, and update information using a computer terminal. Organize own work and set priorities within procedural guidelines. Operate modern office equipment, including computer equipment and copy machines. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work. Perform routine clerical work, including maintenance of appropriate records, mathematical calculations, and compiling information for reports. Education and Experience : Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. Equivalent to a high school diploma or GED and one (1) year of responsible office experience.

Licenses and Certifications :

PAY AND / OR SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL

A Road Worker shall receive a twenty-five ($0.25) cent per hour pay differential for each hour assigned to perform as a heavy equipment operator, when that assignment exceeds five (5) hours in any given standard tour of duty.

  • Employees who work four (4) hours or more in a shift beginning between 8 : 00 pm and 4 : 00 am receive a shift differential of $8.00 per shift.
  • Upon successful completion of 160-hour training program. Social Workers, Social Service Supervisor I / II, Program Managers, and Deputy Directors receive a five (5%) percent salary differential. HCU employees who work between 6 : 00 pm and 7 : 00 am receive a shift differential of $3.00 per hour. The shift must start at 2 : 00 pm or later and applies to hours actually worked between 6 : 00 pm and 7 : 00 am. An IT Technician required to return to work or return to work on a day not regularly scheduled and work four (4) hours or more in a shift receive shift differential at the following rates :

3 : 00 pm to 11 : 00 pm shift - $6.50 per shift 11 : 00 pm to 7 : 00 am shift - $9.00 per shift

OE3 employees who work four (4) hours or more in a shift receive shift differential at the following rates :

3 : 00 pm to 11 : 00 pm shift - $6.50 per shift 11 : 00 pm to 7 : 00 am shift - $9.00 per shift

ON-CALL PAY

Assigned personnel shall receive on-call pay of sixdollars and fifteen cents ($6.15) per hour for each hour served on on-call duty. Assigned personnel become ineligible for on-call pay once activated to call back status.

Assigned Animal Control Officers receive on-call pay of two dollars and seventy-five cents ($2.75) per hour from the time they are released from active duty but not before the regular conclusion of shift, until they are back on active duty or the Animal Control workday starts. For each call back, the Animal Control Officers receive overtime pay from the time they leave their home until the time they return to their home or commence their workday.

CALL BACK PAY

Call-back compensation shall be paid for one and one-half (1½) hours at straight-time rates for each call-back occurrence and is in lieu of any travel time and expense to and from home and the first or last work contact point.

UNIFORM ALLOWANCE

Animal Control Officers receive an annual uniform allowance of five hundred dollars ($500.00). Fifty percent (50%) of the allowance is payable during the period of July through December and fifty percent (50%) is payable January through June of each fiscal year.

Fire Prevention Inspectors receive an annual uniform allowance of seven hundred dollars ($700.00). Fifty percent (50%) of the allowance is payable during the period of July through December and fifty percent (50%) is payable January through June of each fiscal year.

An annual uniform allowance of one hundred fifty dollars ($150) each fiscal year paid twice a year in January and July will be provided for the purchase of boots, coats, shirts, hats, uniforms, gloves, gators (snake proof), overalls or coveralls. Items of clothing will reflect the County logo or wording identifying the employee as a County employee. This section applies only to the following classifications : Appraiser, Building Inspector, Environmental Health Specialist, Planner, Solid Waste Technician, Solid Waste Specialist, Junior / Assistant / Associate Engineers, Engineering Technicians, Land Surveyors, Code Compliance Investigators and Agriculture & Air Pollution Inspector.

A uniform allowance of four hundred dollars ($400) per fiscal year paid twice a year July and January each fiscal year will be provided for the purchase of prescription safety glasses, safety boots, a safety coat, shirts with a County seal replica, trousers, hats and gloves.

Employees in the Road Operations Division, Skilled Trades and Maintenance Division who require corrective lenses for the normal execution of their job duties receive reimbursement towards safety glasses every two years.
