Summary

Job Summary

Drives research projects scientifically and determines the course of research as evidenced by leadership, obtaining funding, writing, or other recognition. May not necessarily receive independent resources; however, their contribution is essential to the conceptual / scientific success of the project.

Essential Functions

Trains / mentors study staff.

Mentor a team of data analysts in statistical analysis, study design, and coding.

Overseeing progress across multiple research and evaluation projects.

Identifies, assimilates, and synthesizes data needed for computer models and manages databases relating to statistical and related software.

Work closely with cross-functional teams (analytical chemistry, sensory, applications & flavor creation) to achieve desired results.

Lead internal encapsulation science research program as well as external research collaborations.

Design, execute and interpret research experiments.

Analyze and present data at internal and external meetings.

Qualifications

Overview

The Brain Modulation Lab within the Department of Neurosurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) seeks a full-time Research Scientist to advance neuromodulation therapies through research of intracranial electrophysiological data. The successful candidate will focus on clinical neuroscience projects related to neuromodulation for neurological disorders, such as Responsive Neuro Stimulation (RNS) for epilepsy and Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for movement disorders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Collection & Analysis
  • Extract information from Electronic Medical Records to understand access and use of neurosurgical treatments.
  • Process and interpret chronic electrophysiological recordings from implanted neuromodulation devices.
  • Develop algorithms to track changes in neural signatures over months to years and relate them to clinical outcomes.
  • Collect and analyze patient interviews to understand their experience using DBS systems.
  • Method Development
  • Implement advanced signal-processing pipelines (e.g., time-frequency analysis, connectivity metrics) using MATLAB, Python, or R.
  • Integrate machine-learning approaches for analyzing behavioral and intracranial data.
  • Grant Writing
  • Support the development and submission of grant proposals for funding lab research.
  • Collaboration & Mentorship
  • Work closely with epileptologists, neurosurgeons, and biomedical engineers in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Supervise post-doctoral fellows, clinical research coordinators, and graduate students in data analysis and manuscript preparation.
  • Dissemination & Leadership
  • Publish results in peer-reviewed journals and present at national meetings.
  • Contribute to departmental conferences and serve on relevant committees.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
  • Demonstrated experience with intracranial EEG (sEEG, ECoG) data acquisition and analysis.
  • Proficiency in signal-processing toolkits and custom scripting (MATLAB, Python, or R).
  • Track record of publications in human neurophysiology.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with RNS system datasets and device programming logs.
  • Expertise in machine-learning applications for seizure detection or prediction.
  • Prior work with IRB / IDE protocols and human subjects compliance.
  • Experience mentoring trainees in clinical research environments.
