Position Summary :

The ASL / Deaf Studies Department at Johnson County Community College is seeking to hire an American Sign Language / English Interpreter to interpret for Deaf faculty, as well as JCCC faculty, staff, and students who interact with the departmental instructors. Interpretation services would be provided for class lectures, labs, meetings, and general interactions, while translation services may be required for texts, classroom materials, notes, etc. The interpreter must be flexible with scheduling, as both day and evening hours may be required.

Required Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Interpreter Training or related field
  • NIC certified, or RID CI / CT certified, or BEI (Advanced or Master) certified
  • Must adhere to the Interpreter Code of Ethics and the Professional Code of Conduct
  • 5 or more years of experience interpreting in a variety of settings including : classroom, meetings or one-on-one settings.
  • Experience interpreting for and / or extensive knowledge of ASL Linguistics, Deaf culture and ASL Literature
  • Exceptional skills providing ASL to English (voicing) interpretation and English to ASL interpretation
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong ethical decision-making skills and ability to articulate reasoning behind decisions
  • Commitment to working in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications :

  • Three years of interpreting experience at the post-secondary level

  • Unofficial transcripts are required for all Adjunct faculty and Faculty positions.
  • Position Details : Job duties include but are not limited to :

  • Provide ASL and English interpretation services in a variety of settings, including classes and meetings.
  • Provide course or meeting material translation as needed.
  • Prepare for classes and meetings by reviewing notes, topics, and documents prior to the session for interpretation to ensure smooth translation.
  • Serve as a liaison between the Deaf / Hard of Hearing (D / HH) population and students or faculty.
  • Travel to and from class or meeting venues to provide interpretation.
  • Maintain and promote sensitivity and respect for cultural and linguistic differences observed in the D / HH community.
  • Remain current in the interpretation field through participation in workshops, professional meetings, and continuing education.
  • Duties and responsibilities, as required by business necessity, may be added, deleted or changed at any time at the discretion of management, formally or informally, either verbally or in writing. Scheduling, shift assignments and work location may be changed at any time, as required by business necessity.
