Position Summary :
We’re looking for a Senior Database Engineer who thrives in a DevOps-oriented, forward-thinking, and collaborative environment. This role will focus on engineering and supporting enterprise-grade database platforms—primarily SQL Server, Oracle, and Azure—with a strong emphasis on automation, CI / CD, and AI-driven operations.
As part of a global follow-the-sun team, you’ll help ensure 24 / 7 reliability and agility of our database infrastructure. You’ll be expected to apply Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles including SLOs, SLIs, and error budgets, and contribute to both operational support and strategic modernization efforts.
Essential Responsibilities :
- Engineer and support database solutions across Oracle, SQL Server, and Azure platforms
- Modernize legacy database platforms, develop automation, and expand cloud database capabilities
- Perform database administration duties including support, maintenance, and troubleshooting of enterprise-wide database instances
- Collaborate with internal customers and development teams to provide expertise in database selection, architecture, design, and sizing
- Manage database access, including user, role, profile, and object-level permissions
- Provide support and guidance to application developers with performance tuning, data modeling, and physical database design
- Apply SRE principles to improve reliability, performance, and operational efficiency
- Leverage AI / ML tools for intelligent monitoring, anomaly detection, and performance optimization
- Build and manage infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools, including Bicep
- Participate in Level 3 on-call rotation, contributing to incident resolution and root cause analysis
- Create and manage database reports, visualizations, and dashboards
- Stay current with industry trends and best practices to continuously improve database services
- Mentor junior engineers and foster a culture of teamwork, continuous learning, and service excellence
Required Qualifications :
Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent experience5+ years of experience in database engineering or administration in large enterprise environmentsExperience with Oracle, Oracle Data GuardStrong experience with SQL Server (2016 / 2017 / 2019 / 2022), including development, administration, security, and advanced features such as Always-On, replication, clustering, backup / restore, and performance tuningHands-on experience with Microsoft Azure, including Azure SQLDB, CosmosDB, and IaaS / PaaS database servicesExperience with virtualized environments and multi-datacenter deploymentsProficiency in PowerShell, T-SQL, Linux shell scripting, and modern languages such as PythonExperience with CI / CD pipelines using tools such as Azure DevOps or similar platformsDemonstrated ability to create database instances using IaC and configuration management toolsStrong communication skills across technical and non-technical audiencesPassion for automation and eliminating repetitive processesHighly motivated, continuous learner with a drive to implement emerging technologiesPreferred Qualifications :
Experience with SAP ASE Sybase on LinuxCertifications in Azure, Oracle, or Microsoft SQL ServerExperience participating in Level 3 on-call rotations and incident responseExposure to containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud migration strategiesWork Location and Arrangement : This role will be based out of the CarMax Technology Hub - Plano, TX or CarMax Technology Innovation Center - Richmond, VA and have a Hybrid work arrangement
