Sulit Press, a boutique publishing house that helps women entrepreneurs, executives, and creatives share their stories through both multi-author anthologies and full-length nonfiction books, is seeking an exceptional Developmental Editor (contract role) to join our team.

The ideal candidate has strong experience in nonfiction and memoir, a gift for shaping stories without losing the author’s unique voice, and the ability to manage both chapter-length pieces (3,000–3,500 words) and full-length manuscripts (50K–80K words).

This role requires not only technical editing skills but also kindness, professionalism, and excellent customer service. Our authors are high-level leaders, and we want them to feel supported and respected throughout the editing process.

General Responsibilities

  • Strengthen story structure, pacing, and clarity.
  • Ensure consistent tone and voice while honoring each author’s individuality.
  • Suggest areas for expansion, cutting, or re-framing.
  • Deliver edits within agreed timelines (multi-author projects often run on 6–8 week schedules; solo books may require 10–12 weeks).
  • Collaborate with Sulit Press founder (who provides high-level feedback early on) and our line editor (who polishes after your pass).

You may also meet with authors via Zoom to discuss edits, so clear communication and a collaborative approach are essential.

Requirements

  • 3+ years experience in developmental editing (nonfiction or memoir required; anthologies / collections a plus).
  • Proven ability to manage both short-form chapters and long-form books.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Ability to edit with encouragement while offering direct, actionable feedback.
  • How to Apply :

To be considered for this role, please complete these simple steps and email them to hello@sulitpress.com with the subject line : Editor Application.

    1) Share your experience

  • Provide your resume, along with a short list of 2–3 nonfiction or memoir books you’ve developmentally edited (include Amazon or publisher links if available).
  • 2) Answer this question :

  • An author’s chapter is 1,500 words over the limit, wanders off theme, and buries her strongest story in the middle. How would you guide her to revise?
  • Please respond as if you were writing directly to the author. This will help us understand your editing style, communication approach, and how you balance honesty with encouragement.
  • 3) Tell us about yourself

  • In 500 words or less, share your editing philosophy and what excites you about working with authors at Sulit Press.
  • Compensation ranges from $2,000–$2,500 per multi-author book (Avg. 50–55K words total) and $3,500–$5,000 for solo books, depending on scope. This is a project-based contract role with ongoing opportunities (3–4 multi-author books per year plus select solo projects).
