The City of Port Hueneme is hiring for a Solid Waste Equipment Operator I or II. The position offers a salary range from $42,889.60 to $65,124.80 annually and is located in Port Hueneme, CA. This is a full-time position.

The position is open until 7 / 25 / 2025 at 11 : 59 PM Pacific Time (US & Canada); Tijuana. The department is Public Works.

The job duties include operating and maintaining commercial automated refuse collection vehicles, performing a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of vehicles, delivering and picking up containers, inspecting vehicles, assisting in training, and performing related work as required.

For Solid Waste Equipment Operator I, this is the entry-level class performing routine and less complex duties, learning City policies, and procedures under supervision. Advancement to the II level is based on proficiency, certifications, and supervisory discretion.

For Solid Waste Equipment Operator II, this is the full journey level class performing the full range of duties, providing training to less experienced operators, and receiving only occasional instruction. Advancement to the II level is based on management judgment and / or certification.

Qualifications include knowledge of solid waste collection programs, operational characteristics of vehicles, safety practices, and the ability to drive, operate equipment, and maintain records. Education typically requires completion of the twelfth grade, and experience or training involving equipment operation or solid waste experience is necessary. A valid California Class "B" commercial driver's license is required, along with a TWIC card and NBVC card.

Physical demands include exposure to various environmental conditions, heavy physical effort, and the ability to lift and carry moderately heavy objects. Vision and hearing should be in the normal ranges.
