About the Position

The City of South Gate is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Engineer to create an eligibility list. The eligibility list established may be used to fill upcoming vacancies within this classification up to one (1) year.

Under direction, performs entry level professional civil engineering office and field work in the development, construction and maintenance of the City's public works and traffic engineering work; performs related duties as required. Works under the direct supervision of higher level professional engineering staff.

The Assistant Engineer is the entry class in the professional level engineering series. Incumbents are distinguished from the Associate Engineer in that the Assistant does not supervise staff.

Examples of Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this classification. The incumbent may not perform all of the listed functions and / or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Designs and develops engineering public works plans, drawings and specifications, engineering calculations, cost estimates, contract provisions, legal descriptions, and maps, ensuring compliance with policies, local and state codes, ordinances and regulations.

Participates in project management as part of a team; performs general engineering review analysis of designs and checks calculations; checks applications and routine engineering plans submitted for permits; prepares and issues permits for public works improvements; conducts related research.

Performs field inspections and coordinates inspections with consultant staff on a wide variety of public works projects; prepares inspection reports.

Performs surveys of City property and public right-of-way for water, street, sewer and electrical projects.

Prepares correspondence and various written reports; maintains accurate and up-to-date project files.

Investigates public complaints and problems and takes appropriate action to resolve issues; provides technical assistance and information to the public in person, by computer and by telephone.

Minimum & Desirable Qualifications

Training and Experience

Any combination of education and / or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary. A typical way of obtaining the knowledge and abilities would be any combination equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field and one (1) year of civil engineering experience. An Engineering in Training (EIT) Certificate may be substituted for the one (1) year of experience. Possession of or ability to obtain a California Class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record is required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of : civil engineering principles and practices; public works construction methods, design and materials; engineering specifications and public works construction standards; mathematical techniques used in engineering calculations; map reading and surveying techniques; Geographic Information System (GIS), AutoCAD and other computer software applications.

Ability to : read and interpret specifications and blueprints; prepare concise accurate reports; understand and interpret legal property descriptions, engineering maps and other records; interpret and follow City and departmental policies, rules and regulations; maintain accurate filing and indexing systems; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

California Department of Motor Vehicle (DMV) Pull Notice System

An incumbent appointed to this position is subject to enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program. The Pull Notice program provides information on the incumbent's driving record and Driver's License status on a periodic basis to the City of South Gate. An employee assigned a City vehicle must acknowledge receipt and understanding of City Administrative Regulations covering the use of City vehicles.

  • Employment Eligibility List : The Employment Eligibility List will be established after completion of the examination process. Current and future vacancies will be filled from this list. Lists typically last for 12 months, but may be extended or abolished in accordance with the City's Civil Service rules and regulations.
