Extended School Services Program Aide

La Mesa-Spring Valley School District offers positions for Extended School Services Program Aides with a salary range of $16.45 to $20.03 hourly. These part-time positions are available in various locations in La Mesa-Spring Valley, CA.

Job Summary & Examination Date

New Program Aides are authorized to be hired at an advanced starting step of Step D ($18.12) per hour. After school sports and coaching opportunities : A pathway to teaching! ESS Program Aides work August through June months only. Under the direction of the Extended Student Services (ESS) Site Lead, the ESS Program Aide participates in a variety of duties in the operation of the Extended Student Services Program at an assigned school site. They observe and modify behavior of students enrolled in the before and after school program during educational and recreational activities; coordinate and implement academic activities aligned with District curricula and educational standards; and assist in maintaining a clean and safe learning environment for students.

The ideal candidate has some childcare experience, either through a paid position or volunteer experiences. The candidate has the knowledge, interest, and ability to create a safe and engaging environment that provides children with age-appropriate and meaningful learning. The ideal candidate exhibits integrity, professionalism, caring, and competency as a positive role model. He or she has a commitment to building positive relationships with a culturally, linguistically, and socio-economically diverse community of students, staff, and parents. An examination will be given to establish an eligibility list for the position of Extended School Services Program Aide in order to fill vacancies for the current school year.

Examples of Duties

Essential Functions :

  • Assists students, individually or in small groups, with lesson assignments for the purpose of practicing and reinforcing learning concepts and assisting students in reaching academic goals and grade level standards.
  • Assists the ESS Site Lead in responding to inquiries from a variety of sources for the purpose of resolving issues, providing information and / or direction to other sources.
  • Assists with the implementation of instructional programs, lesson plans, and enrichment activities for the purpose of presenting and / or reinforcing learning concepts.
  • Assists with the planning of learning and / or age appropriate activities for the purpose of presenting and / or reinforcing learning concepts.
  • Attends department and / or in-service meetings for the purpose of conveying and / or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Coordinates and / or oversees individual and / or groups of students in a variety of settings for the purpose of providing a safe and positive learning and recreational environment.
  • Develops and implements craft activities.
  • Promotes appropriate student behavior and good habits through implementation of a discipline plan for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes and encouraging student development.
  • Transfers children directly from / to parents or designee for the purpose of ensuring safety of students and meeting the District and program requirements.

Other Functions :

  • Distributes crafts and / or play materials for the purpose of providing required supplies.
  • Serves nutritious snacks for the purpose of ensuring students receive proper nutritional items to meet federal and state guidelines.
  • Maintains program equipment and work areas for the purpose of ensuring availability of items and / or providing a safe learning and recreational environment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    Experience : Fifty (50) hours of experience working with children

    Education : High School education (High School Diploma preferred)

    Equivalency : Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school and fifty (50) hours of experience working with children in an organized setting. Completion of two years of higher education study OR possession of an Associate's or higher level degree, OR pass assessment that demonstrates knowledge of and the ability to assist in teaching reading, writing, and mathematics OR reading, writing, and mathematics readiness. Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES : KNOWLEDGE OF : Basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and / or ratios. Basic recordkeeping methods and procedures. Behavior management and motivation techniques. Child development principles and practices. First Aid and CPR. Health and safety practices and procedures. Operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications. Safety Practices. Written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly. ABILITY TO : Adapt to changing work priorities; communicate with diverse groups; maintain confidentiality; work as part of a team; and analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Collate data; and use job-related equipment. Identify issues and create action plans. Operate equipment using defined methods. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines. Schedule a number of activities, meetings, and / or events. Understand multi-step written and oral instructions. Work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Work with a wide diversity of individuals. Work with data utilizing defined but different processes WORKING CONDITIONS : ENVIRONMENT : Indoor / outdoor / classroom environment. PHYSICAL DEMANDS : Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to assist students. Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate standard office and classroom equipment. Hearing and speaking to exchange information. Lifting and carrying light objects as assigned by the position. Seeing to read a variety of materials and monitor student activities. Sitting or standing for extended periods of time. HAZARDS : Potential contact with body fluids. Potential for contact with blood-borne pathogens and communicable diseases.
