Experimental Isotope Laboratory Manager Job Description

The candidate must hold a PhD in geochemistry at the time of hiring. The candidate must have detailed knowledge of non-traditional stable isotope systems and high-pressure high-temperature experiments. The candidate must have demonstrated skills and experience in conducting research using piston cylinder apparatuses, gas-mixing furnaces, clean lab facilities, and MC-ICPMS. Experiences in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students, outreach with groups under-represented in STEM, and course instruction and development will be preferred.

Experimental Geochemistry Laboratory Supervision (30%) : Manager will be responsible for maintaining the piston cylinders and gas-mixing furnaces and associated sample preparation instruments, such as the polish station, diamond saw, furnaces. Duties will include, but not limited to :

  • Order supplies and replacement parts, including experimental assemblies, polishing supplies, containers, crucibles, wires, thermocouples, chemicals, saw blades, epoxy resin and hardener.
  • Initial pressure and temperature calibration for the facilities.
  • Maintain furnaces and piston cylinders, repair as necessary and liaison with engineers.
  • Update and maintain laboratory safety documentation.

MC-ICPMS Laboratory Supervision (40%) : Manager will be responsible for maintaining the Thermo Neptune MC-ICPMS instrument (which will be upgraded to a Nu Sapphire CC-MC-ICPMS) with assistance from the PI (P. Ni). The manager will also contribute to maintaining the clean laboratory facility. Duties will include, but not limited to :

  • Maintain filtration system for high-purity water.
  • Order supplies, including acids, exchange resins, gloves, lab coats, pipettes, Teflon bottles, ion exchange resins.
  • Distill acids and maintain acid still.
  • Update and maintain laboratory safety documentation.
  • Supervise cleaning of facility on regular basis.
  • Research and Teaching Support (30%) : Manager will assist faculty and students in using existing analytical methods in both laboratories. In some instances, this support will include conducting experiments or analyzing samples as requested (and in consultation with the PI, P. Ni). He / she will also help develop new analytical techniques with faculty and students in consultation with the PI (P. Ni).
