The Behavior Interventionist is a support staff member in a public school setting who is tasked with making positive changes to student behavior and staff capacity in order to improve academic growth and achievement. This professional is responsible for systemic behavior intervention, teacher professional development, and parent communication. This professional will support and coordinate behavior interventions within an MTSS framework and will direct classroom and school-wide behavior management strategies, which include mentoring, coaching, behavioral support, and family / community resources. The Behavior Interventionist communicates directly with administration and teachers regarding student behavior and discipline outcomes.

Essential Functions

• Provide individualized and small group support for student educational success, including behavior, social-emotional coaching / management, and goal setting.
• Collaborate with teachers, parents, and other school staff to develop and implement individualized and small-group behavior interventions for students. Monitor student progress and adjust behavior interventions as needed.
• Engage and empower parents by attending school events, parent-teacher conferences, and / or providing families with techniques that support positive behavior development.
• Identify and connect students, families, and staff to community resources, as needed.
• Maintain confidential and accurate student records and reports, including assessments, interventions, progress notes, and referrals.
• Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other school staff to identify and address student needs and provide appropriate referrals as needed.
• Provide professional development and coaching to staff that targets research-based strategies, which may include : defining and measuring behavior; understanding principles of reinforcement; teaching new behavior; de-escalation, identifying antecedents / consequences, and appropriate implementation of behavior interventions.
• Conduct classroom observations of teachers and students to obtain anecdotal data that will allow the development of strategies to address behaviors, and classroom management, or observe the effectiveness of interventions.
• Participate in special education, section 504, and grade-level CTM meetings, as appropriate.
• Conduct threat assessments as needed and consult with school personnel and community resources, such as crisis response and / or DCS to provide alternative support systems.
• Stay up-to-date with current research and best practices in the field of behavior intervention and participate in professional development opportunities as needed.
• Identify potential causes of chronic absenteeism and students at risk for or are chronically absent. Partner with families to improve attendance by connecting them to appropriate support within the school and the community.
