Description of the Organization :

For almost 30 years, LEAP has worked with children, teenagers, and young adults in New Haven, Connecticut in some of the lowest income urban neighborhoods in America. As the largest youth agency in our city, we provide free academic support, social enrichment, and leadership development, but we do so in a unique way. We give older students (ages 16-24) the training, education, and resources they need to work as counselors to our younger students (ages 7-15). In doing so, we go beyond impacting individual lives through education and employment. We build a community with power and purpose.

Position Summary and Principal Working Relationships :

The Site Coordinator plays a key role in managing LEAP’s community-based programming. Under the guidance and supervision of the Children’s Program Director and oversight of the Director of Programs, the Site Coordinator ensures high-quality operations at one of LEAP’s neighborhood sites. This role involves leading and mentoring Assistant Site Coordinators, Senior Counselors, and Junior Counselors in delivering social and academic programming for children.

The Site Coordinator reports directly to the Children’s Program Director for direction, coaching, and evaluation. Additional oversight is provided by the Director of Programs.

Essential Duties :

Counselor Supervision & Mentorship

  • Oversee and mentor 20+ high school and college student employees serving as counselors.
  • Establish site norms and expectations regarding attendance, behavior, and group management.
  • Guide counselors in planning and implementing engaging educational group activities.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide constructive feedback.
  • Lead dynamic site-based training to prepare counselors for their roles.

Child & Community Engagement

  • Build strong, long-term relationships with children and support their academic and social growth.
  • Plan and coordinate activities to recruit neighborhood children for the program.
  • Develop site-wide and neighborhood activities that foster unity and learning.
  • Communicate regularly with parents about their child’s progress.
  • Program Operations

  • Establish daily site schedules based on curriculum and counselor availability.
  • Troubleshoot on-site crises and develop solutions to meet individual child and counselor needs.
  • Maintain collaborative relationships with community partners.
  • Complete all LEAP-mandated training sessions.
  • Summer Program Requirement

  • Responsible for assisting in the development and facilitation of summer training.
  • Live full-time in the neighborhoods LEAP serves for eight weeks during the summer to oversee operations.
  • Qualifications :

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.
  • Experience in youth leadership development, community service, and / or tutoring.
  • Passion for providing educational opportunities to children in high-poverty urban communities.
  • Commitment to inspiring positive social change through education, service, and community development.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Bilingual (Spanish / English) is a plus.
  • Valid driver’s license and own transportation required.
  • Salary : $48,000 - $52,000
