JOB DESCRIPTION Job Requirements

POSITION SUMMARY

The Perinatal Safety Nurse (PSN) functions as a dedicated clinical expert, educator, and quality advisor overseeing the advancement of maternal and neonatal safety at Health First (HF). The Perinatal Safety Nurse develops, coordinates, and sustains safety, quality, and equity initiatives across the perinatal care continuum (Obstetrics Emergency Department, Labor and Delivery, Mother-Baby, Newborn Nursery, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). The Perinatal Safety Nurse partners with interdisciplinary teams to promote a high-reliability culture and reduce preventable harm across the Integrated Delivery Network (IDN).

PRIMARY ACCOUNTABILITES

  • Serves as an on-unit safety coach, observing practices, facilitating real-time training, and modeling high-reliability behaviors and best practices.
  • Conducts surveillance of safety metrics and near-miss events, leading multidisciplinary reviews to identify trends and recommend improvement opportunities, while directing and support quality improvement (QI) initiatives.
  • Collaborates and assists the education team with perinatal simulation training and team communication programs (e.g. obstetric emergency drills).
  • Develops and Disseminates evidence-based safety standards, including Electronic Fetal Monitoring (EFM) documentation using National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) definitions and perinatal safety packets.
  • Monitors adhering practices on compliance with protocols such as, maternal hemorrhage, sepsis, hypertensive emergencies, and neonatal resuscitation.
  • Partners with nursing leadership and medical staff to support and enhance accurate, timely documentation and Associate learning following safety events.
  • Promotes equitable care by identifying disparities in outcomes, supporting interventions that address racial and ethnic inequities.
  • Participates in perinatal safety huddles, patient rounds, and clinical forums to elevate safety concerns and promote transparency.
  • Acts as a supportive resource during and after adverse events, fostering a just culture and promoting Associate well-being.
  • Works alongside Holmes Regional Medical Center (HRMC) and Viera Hospital (VH) leadership teams on developing and implementing aligned perinatal safety strategies consistently across campuses.

Work Experience

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education : Any one of the following :
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) OR
  • Enrolled in BSN program within six (6) months of start date OR
  • Completing BSN program within six (6) months of start date.
  • Work Experience : Three (3) years’ recent clinical experience in Labor and Delivery.
  • Licensure : Registered Nurse (RN) Licensure in the State of Florida or endorsement.
  • Certification :
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS) Healthcare Provider Completion Card prior to start date and maintained.
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification prior to start date and maintained.
  • Certified Electronic Fetal Monitoring (C-EFM) certification within six (6) months of start date and maintained.
  • Obstetric and Neonatal Quality and Safety (C-ONQS) certification within six (6) months of start date and maintained.
  • Registered Nurse Certified in Inpatient Obstetrics (RNC-OB) certification within twelve (12) months of start date and maintained.
  • Skills / Knowledge / Abilities :
  • Advanced knowledge of perinatal clinical care, patient safety, and high-reliability principles.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead change, foster collaboration, and promote psychological safety.
  • Proficient in clinical data interpretation, QI methodologies, and evidence-based practice.
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and engage frontline teams effectively.
  • PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education : Master’s degree in Nursing (MSN) or relevant field.
  • Work Experience : Prior experience in quality improvement, simulation and team training.
  • Certification :
  • Certified Electronic Fetal Monitoring (C-EFM) certification prior to start date and maintained.
  • Obstetric and Neonatal Quality and Safety (C-ONQS) certification prior to start date and maintained.
  • Registered Nurse Certified in Inpatient Obstetrics (RNC-OB) certification prior to start date and maintained.
  • PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Majority of time involves sitting or standing; occasional walking, bending, and stooping.
  • Long periods of computer time or at workstation.
  • Light work that may include lifting or moving objects up to 20 pounds with or without assistance.
  • May be exposed to inside environments with varied temperatures, air quality, lighting and / or low to moderate noise.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.
  • Visual acuity and hand-eye coordination to perform tasks.
  • Workspace may vary from open to confined.
  • May require travel to various facilities within and beyond county perimeter; may require use of personal vehicle.
