This is NOT a sensitive position. Campus Security Authority Yes Campus Security Authority Statement This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority. A Campus Security Authority (or CSA) is defined as an “official of the institution with significant responsibility for student and campus activities.” A CSA is required to immediately report any crime that is reported to them to the University Police who will then review, evaluate, and investigate the reported crime. Annual training is required by the Department of Education for all personnel who have been designated as a Campus Security Authority. Designated Personnel No Designated Personnel Statement A “designated position” could potentially be required to work (depending on the event) during an emergency closing.This is NOT a “designated position.” Statement of Economic Interest No Statement of Economic Interest Statement This position does NOT require a Statement of Personal Economic Interest. Restricted Position No Restricted Position Statement A restricted position would be subject to availability of funding. This is NOT a restricted position. Chief Objective of Position The Internship Coordinator will implement programming and outreach efforts to raise awareness of and participation in internships and work-based learning. The Coordinator will serve as an essential part of the Center for Career Planning team and will build relationships with a variety of constituents including employers, faculty and staff, alumni, etc. The Coordinator will counsel students on their career plans, teach an internship course, and oversee the Center’s internship program. Work Tasks INTERNSHIP PROGRAM MANAGEMENT :

  • Design and implement student programming related to internships / work-based learning including workshops on how to find internships and maximize the experience, as well as facilitate opportunities for students to understand and communicate the value of internships.
  • Co-supervise the Career Planning Interns and coordinate professional development opportunities.
  • Coordinate and evaluate the summer experiential learning program known as SHIP, including collaboration with the Center for Community Engagement.
  • Advise students individually on how to find internships / work-based learning opportunities.
  • Teach credit-bearing course, The Internship : A Course for Your Career each semester.
  • Conduct training sessions, along with Work-Based Learning Developer, for employers on internships and work-based learning.
  • Assist the Director of Career Planning in managing internship funds for students, including outreach to alumni and other constituents to increase funds.
  • Work with faculty designated as internship coordinators each semester to track where students are completing internships / work-based learning and update databases and resources accordingly.
  • Maintain updated lists and resources of internships and other work-based learning programs to share with students.
  • Create marketing materials and messaging related to work-based learning programs and opportunities.
  • Interface with faculty to understand internship course requirements by academic discipline and create resources to educate students.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, parents, and alumni to develop internship opportunities.
  • Assist with the summer activities survey to document activities of students between junior and senior years.
  • Research and understand internship trends and communicate to invested members of the Christopher Newport community.

CAREER COUNSELING :

  • Provide information, advice, and programming to students and alumni of all majors and class years to facilitate the career planning process.
  • Teach students how to use career-related technology including Handshake at CNU, LinkedIn, and other career resources.
  • Review and offer feedback on resumes, cover letters, graduate school personal statements, and other career-related documents.
  • EMPLOYER DEVELOPMENT AND RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT :

  • Advise employers on best practices for internships and work-based learning and recommend strategies for employers in building their brands on campus.
  • Approve internship, fellowship and experiential learning postings in Handshake at CNU.
  • Assist employer development team, employers, and faculty and staff with development of internship and job opportunities and support employer and graduate school-related outreach efforts and activities.
  • Participate in various local, state, regional, and national organizations, conferences, and recruitment events to increase internship and employment opportunities for students.
  • COLLABORATION WITH CAMPUS CONSTITUENCIES :

  • Collaborate with student groups, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, and recruiters to deliver major / field specific programming and to increase awareness of and usage for the Center for Career Planning.
  • Communicate the value of a Christopher Newport liberal arts and sciences education to a wide variety of constituents including students, recruiters, parents, alumni, and faculty / staff.
  • Promote student programming and recruitment events.
  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of career services and best practices in career services, work-based learning, higher education and recruiting.
  • Serve on University and other professional committees and support various Christopher Newport functions.
  • ADDITIONAL DUTIES :

  • Ability to organize and analyze data using advanced functions of spreadsheets and word processing
  • Ability to occasionally work necessary evening and weekend programs.
  • Required Education

  • Master’s degree or Bachelor’s Degree and experience that equates to an advanced degree.
  • Additional Consideration - Education

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Student Personnel
  • Experience Required

  • Experience utilizing electronic job searching and databases
