SUMMARY / SCOPE :

The Academic Advisor provides student support and academic guidance to university freshmen and sophomores and contributes directly to the successful transition of all new students to the university environment.

HSU JOB FAMILY CLASSIFICATION INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING :

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

Work collaboratively as part of the Academic Advising Center to provide academic support services to students.

Provide academic advising, guidance, and help to our new students as they choose and enroll in appropriate courses.

Learn and stay up to date on requirements of academic programs, including related programs, program tracks, and degrees offered.

Communicate program requirements to students.

Meet with students individually before registration in person, by phone, and by email or text.

Collaborate with university faculty and staff to address challenges, offer solutions, and help students to connect with their chosen academic programs.

Perform administrative functions that include contact management documentation, file maintenance, and reporting.

There are no supervisor responsibilities for this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES (Language, Mathematical, Reasoning and Computer Skills) :

LANGUAGE SKILLS : Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS : Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY : Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

COMPUTER SKILLS : To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software; Project Management software; Internet software and Contact Management systems.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE :

Required :

Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field. Two years of experience in academic advising, counseling, teaching, or student support.

Preferred :

Master's Degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or a related discipline. Four or more years' experience with higher education policies, procedures, and academic systems.

The above requirements will be validated through the written competencies provided by the applicant in addition to the interview process and reference checks regarding past employment experience, qualifications, etc.
