Bay Area Community Resources (BACR) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1976 with the mission to “promote the healthy development of individuals and families, encourage service and volunteerism, and help build community.”

Engaging Community in Advocacy and Policy (ECAP) is a division of BACR that facilitates community-based public health policy advocacy throughout the Bay Area. Campaigns include : increasing awareness and educating decision-makers on policies to reduce exposure to secondhand smoke, reducing youth access to flavored tobacco, reducing youth alcohol and other drug access, and increasing access to and availability of healthy foods through policies, systems and environmental change work.

INITIATIVE

Today’s food landscape — composed predominantly of retail options and media marketing — plays a large role in determining what people purchase and eat. In-store marketing and favorable product placements heavily promote salty snacks and sugar sweetened beverages. The rise of cheap, ready to eat products high in fat, sugar, salt, and calories contribute to health issues including cavities, heart disease, and diabetes. Research in neighboring communities suggests opportunities for promoting healthy items where consumers shop, beginning with the checkout aisles. Supporting healthy food environments is an essential to public health.

DESCRIPTION

The Community Campaign Coordinator is responsible for developing grassroots capacity and empowerment of a diverse group of transitional aged youth to advocate for a healthy retail ordinance to improve the health and quality of life of Oakland residents.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Develop and implement an outreach plan to recruit eight Oakland youth and young adults

Develop and manage a schedule to complete weekly trainings to increase youth advocates’ specific skills for implementation of scope of work

Implement all activities in the scope of work with youth advocates including conducting community assessments, analyzing findings, conducting a strategy chart session, choosing an action and developing, implementing, and maintaining the action plan

Participate in coalition meetings and other stakeholder meetings

Develop and maintain positive relationships with all stakeholders, including other service providers, community leaders, client groups, government and civic organizations and coalitions

Maintain project documentation and complete reporting in a timely and thorough

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have much of the following knowledge and experience :

Demonstrated experience working with policy-makers and community stakeholders and / or transition aged youth to promote policy change; experience in public health and / or nutrition education or policy is highly desirable

Cultural competency and substantial experience working with diverse communities; ability to be flexible and positive in working with people and organizations with different backgrounds and viewpoints

Excellent communication and organizational skills, confidence in public speaking, and ability to balance competing demands

Ability to acquire deep substantive understanding of subject areas including grassroots campaigning, direct action organizing, and relevant issues affecting public health in diverse communities

Knowledge of PowerPoint and social media platforms helpful

Spanish – English Bi-lingual preferred

Possess a strong working knowledge of Oakland organizations and communities

Current driver’s license and insurance required

COMPENSATION AND HOURS

Anticipated start and probable end date : September 1, 2021 through December 20, 2021

This is a 75%-time paid position (30 hours / week) with some flexibility
