Grounds Maintenance Foreman

The City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department is seeking a Grounds Maintenance Foreman to lead a team responsible for maintaining the beauty, safety, and functionality of our parks and landscapes within District 2. Work Hours : This position is expected to work Monday - Friday; 7 : 00 am - 3 : 30 pm in the winter and Monday - Friday; 6 : 00 am - 2 : 30 pm in the summer.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

• Lead a team of five ground maintenance staff, ensuring safety, quality, and productivity in daily operations at a variety of parks in District 2.
• Oversee mowing, edging, trimming, mulching, planting, and installation and / or painting of park furniture and amenities, leaf and trash removal, illegal dumping clean-up, installation of rip rap rock and gravel.
• Train and supervise staff in equipment operation, preventative maintenance, and best practices.
• Operate and maintain a variety of machinery including trucks, trailers, tractors, zero-turn mowers, string trimmers, edgers, Ventrac mowers and a variety of power tools.
• Perform preventative equipment maintenance, replacing worn or damaged parts, sharpening blades, greasing machinery, etc.
• Plan and coordinate volunteer events and special projects such as storm cleanup or illegal dumping removal may require working extended hours and weekends during storm events.
• Complete work orders, daily inspection logs, and ensure compliance with safety and operational standards.

Typical Qualifications

Education and Experience : Associate's Degree in Horticulture, Landscape Design, Grounds Maintenance, Pest Control or related field; 3 to 5 years' experience in specialized turf maintenance, landscape design / maintenance, parks maintenance, arboriculture, or related work OR Any equivalent combination of training and / or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted

Physical Effort : Medium : Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment : Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, construction site, a street environment (near moving traffic) and in a vehicle. Employees may occasionally work in an office or similar indoor environment, warehouse environment, or shop environment.

Work Exposures : There is frequent exposure to individuals who are hostile or irate, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, loud noises (85+ decibels average over 8-hour working day such as heavy trucks, jack hammers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, construction). Employees may occasionally interact with individuals with known violent backgrounds, extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), and toxic or caustic chemicals or substances.
