Position Summary

The Technical Content Manager (TCM) utilizes a strong welding and inspection knowledge and background to oversee the creation of AWS exam questions generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI) to ensure that AI-generated exam questions are technically accurate, aligned with relevant standards and references, and consistent with established certification requirements.

In addition, the TCM is a welding subject matter expert who writes, reviews and approves exam questions, playing an important role in new exam development and maintenance of existing certification exams. The position involves coordinating subject matter experts (SMEs), collaborating with the Assessment Group, and integrating AI-assisted workflows to ensure exam questions are technically sound, adhere to certification exam development standards, and adaptable to evolving project needs.

Essential Duties

  • Exam Content Development

Create, review, approve, and maintain high-quality certification exam questions that accurately assess welding and Non-destructive Testing (NDT) knowledge and skills.

  • Manage AI-driven exam item generation processes, overseeing prompt refinement, content integration, and quality assurance against approved reference materials.
  • Ensure sufficiently large exam item pools consisting of accurate and appropriate questions so exam forms can be refreshed regularly for exam security and integrity.
  • Participate in developing new AWS Certification Programs and be very familiar with existing AWS Certification exam maintenance needs.
  • Collaboration with SMEs and Assessment Team
  • Collaborate with the Qualification and Certification Subcommittee members and the Assessment team to generate, review, and approve AI generated questions.

  • Coordinate with subject matter expert (SME) panels for exam content review and validation.
  • Synthesize SME input to refine and finalize exam questions.
  • Ensure SMEs follow established exam development methodologies and standards.
  • Quality Assurance & Compliance
  • Review exam questions for fairness, bias, and consistency with certification best practices.

  • Maintain exam item pools, ensuring proper tagging, version control, and alignment to job task analyses.
  • Support psychometric validation processes, including item analysis and exam performance reviews.
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Stay current with advances in AI and exam development best practices.

  • Recommend enhancements to exam content creation processes, tools, and SME engagement strategies.
  • AI-Assisted Workflows
  • Leverage AI tools to support item generation, review, and content mapping.

  • Validate AI-generated outputs for accuracy, clarity, and technical soundness.
  • Continuously improve AI workflows by testing prompt variations and integrating SME feedback.

  • Ability to guide AI tools to generate exam questions from source content.
  • Skill in validating the outputs from the model against technical references to ensure accuracy and reliability.

  • Multi-discipline background in Inspection, Auditing, and NDT, etc.
  • Experienced across multiple levels of welding, manufactory, fabrication, engineering industry, construction, quality control, inspection, and quality assurance.
  • Thorough understanding of welding principles, processes, codes, and standards.

  • Required Education and Experience

  • A post-high school technical or associate degree in welding, engineering, or related technical fields (preferred) OR equivalent certifications such as CWI, CWE or SCWI.
  • Five to ten years' work experience of inspection, QC, QA auditing, and NDT in welding industry, engineering, and manufacturing.
  • Preferred Training and Certificates, Certifications

  • Welding-industry recognized credentials and / or AWS credentials such as Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) or Senior CWI (SCWI) credentials.
  • Understanding assessment and psychometric principles.
  • Working Conditions and Required Physical Abilities

    When working on site, this position is in a quiet to moderately noisy indoor office environment. Some travel is required.

    Individuals in this type of position must have the use of sensory skills to effectively communicate with other employees and the public through use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, sit, stand, hear, use of fingers to handle, feel or operate objects and write. Must have the physical capabilities to move about the office and to effectively use and operate various items of office-related equipment, such as but not limited to personal computers, calculators, copy and fax machines. Must be able to remain seated at a keyboard or desk for extended periods. Must be able to lift, carry, and / or push / pull articles weighing up to 20 lbs.
