Under general supervision operates acetylene and electric arc welding equipment in connection with the installation repairing and maintenance of water distribution pipelines and related facilities. Incumbents perform the full range of duties of pipe welders with only occasional instruction or assistance.
The essential duties include but are not limited to the following :
1. Operates all types of welding and metal working machinery necessary to the repair and maintenance of all pipelines pumping stations and water treatment equipment.
2. Lays out pipe and constructs pipe specials such as offsets bends sleeves reducers tanks and meter batteries.
3. Performs repairs by electric arc welding acetylene welding brazing or silver soldering all types of valves tools leak pumps construction and storage equipment.
4. Performs cuts fits and welds pipes; repairs leaks and makes templates.
5. Manufactures emergency repair items such as leak bands tapping tees gate rings and common vault cover.
6. Makes various types of mechanical pipe connections such as threaded flanged flared and compression.
7. Constructs and maintains special truck bodies (PUC only).
The 7360 Pipe Welder will perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications :
Applicants must meet the Minimum Qualifications requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be a Current Category 16 17 or 18 Exempt Employee or Current Temporary Provisional Employee in Class 7360 who has worked at least 2080 hours in Class 7360 with no break in service; AND
- Experience : Five (5) years experience as a welder using oxyacetylene and electric arc welding methods which must include one (1) year as a welder on high pressure pipelines; AND
- License : Possession of a valid California drivers license.
Note : One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week.)

Eligible List / Score Report : A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established so applicants can view the ranks final scores and number of eligible candidates. However an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection upon request once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list / score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g. as a result of appeals) as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission.
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of six months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
Certification Rule : The certification rule for this selection process will be Rule of the List.
