Description

The Utility Operator / Engineer is responsible for maintaining and operating critical building systems including HVAC, refrigeration, electrical, and plumbing systems in a commercial / industrial environment. This position requires hands-on technical expertise, strong troubleshooting skills, and the ability to perform both preventive and corrective maintenance to ensure optimal system performance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor, operate, and adjust refrigeration systems, heat exchangers, HVAC equipment, electrical systems, and hot water systems
  • Analyze equipment readings, identify operational issues, determine root causes, and implement corrective actions
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on base building and critical systems including generators, exhaust fans, industrial chillers, industrial high-pressure boilers, air compressors, air dryers, and pumps
  • Install and repair plumbing, piping, and tubing systems
  • Wire single and three-phase motors, run conduit, and pull wiring to machinery and equipment
  • Install, rebuild, and repair pumps, motors, industrial air compressors, and heat exchangers
  • Replace bearings in various motor types and seals on pumps
  • Install and repair piping, valves, filters, hot water systems, and associated controls
  • Maintain accurate logs of equipment readings, document repairs, close work orders, and track time in reports
  • Manage tools and order supplies as required for installations and repairs
  • Communicate effectively with the Assistant Site Utility Manager and / or Site Utility Manager

Qualifications

  • Minimum five years' experience in HVAC / refrigeration trade or related field, maintaining commercial / industrial facilities
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in building / industrial maintenance and troubleshooting
  • Multi-skilled ability to complete various technical tasks with a high percentage of "wrench time"
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards and local codes
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing equipment in heavy industrial settings
  • Strong understanding of Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS)
  • Ability to manage stress effectively in a noisy, hot, and demanding environment
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with ability to analyze issues, diagnose problems, and communicate solutions
  • Capability to work both independently and collaboratively with a team

  • Lift and carry tools and equipment as required for maintenance tasks
  • Stand, walk, climb, and maintain balance while working at various heights
  • Use hands to operate tools and equipment with precision
