We are seeking a Software Engineer to work in our Pulsar & Fast Transients Software & Firmware Development and Research team who are developing software for the Square Kilometre Array Observatory (SKAO) which is constructing two very large telescopes. The team is based within the Pulsar, Exoplanets and Transients (PET) group at the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics (JBCA). JBCA has a long history of pulsar astrophysics, operating the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank, which has been involved in the observation of pulsars since their discovery. Pulsar researchers at Manchester have been involved in the discovery of more than half of all known pulsars. The PET research group is one of the largest such groups in the world and has an established track record of high-impact publications.

In this role, you will work as part of the world-class team of researchers and software developers within the PSS team to develop all or some of firmware, software and algorithms for pulsar and fast transient research for the SKAO. Pulsars and fast transients make up some of the high-profile science goals of the SKAO. We are looking for someone who has demonstrated experience with high-performance computing on hardware which may include CPUs, GPUs and FPGAs. In particular we are interested in applicants who have experience of modern coding practices and software techniques. The post-holder will work with Prof. Ben Stappers who leads the MeerTRAP, TRAPUM and PSS-SKAO teams at the University of Manchester, and will be a member of a team of developers with international industry and academia backgrounds.

The team operates under the SAFe software development framework as determined by the SKAO, with key elements being;

You will hold (or be about to obtain) an engineering, computer science, astronomy or physics degree in a relevant field. Experience with pulsar or fast transient science applications would be desirable. You will also have significant experience with at least some of the following : C or C++, algorithm development and implementation, real time observing systems and the use of FPGAs or GPUs as accelerators.
