Distinguishing Features of Work

As a Water Service Technician in the Water Division within Public Works and Utilities, you'll play a crucial role in keeping the City’s water flowing smoothly. This hands-on, technical position allows you to work independently while using maps, electronic devices, and tools to inspect, maintain, and repair water distribution systems and service meters. You'll respond to customer service requests by turning water service on and off, investigating issues like leaks or pressure problems, and ensuring repairs are made quickly and efficiently. As a trusted representative in the field, you will interact directly with customers, requiring tact and professionalism. Whether you're troubleshooting leaks or coordinating with Dispatch, your work helps ensure safe, reliable water service for the community. If you enjoy a role with variety, independence, and technical challenges, this could be the perfect fit for you. This is skilled technical work using maps, electronic devices, line locators and various tools and methods to inspect and maintain the water distribution system including service meters. Work involves inspection, investigation, initiating and discontinuing water service to customers as well as identifying leaks and main breaks. Work is performed with considerable independence and requires dealing tactfully with customers. Directions are given and work is reviewed by a supervisor, but employees are expected to perform tasks independently.

THE DAY AND HOURS FOR THIS POSITION : Monday - Friday : 7 : 30am - 4 : 00pm

Examples of Work Performed

Installs, inspects, repairs and removes all sizes manual and electronic meters and meter sets.

Turns water service on and off in response to service orders.

Investigates and resolves customer complaints related to consumption, pressure and quality.

Collects and verifies meter readings.

Enters and retrieves electronic data.

May assign new accounts to appropriate routes.

Diagnoses leaks in water facilities such as meters, pipelines, hydrants and valves. Advises customer of corrective action needed if leak appears to be on private property.

Advises Dispatch about location and severity of leaks.

Closes valves to isolate area of water system for repairs.

Acts as back-up for Dispatcher.

May function in a lead position for training or other purposes.

Completion of work assignments requires operation of a vehicle.

Requirements of Work

Knowledge of the water meters and water service and distribution systems is preferred.

Considerable knowledge of the geography of, and street locations in, the city.

Ability to work from schematics, blueprints, maps and computers.

Ability to plan and organize work.

Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather.

Ability to climb ladders and to bend, twist and reach.

Ability to traverse uneven terrain.

Ability to tolerate airborne environmental nuisances associated with urban exhaust, open grounds and windy conditions

Ability to enter and exit enclosures through openings as small as 30" in diameter.

Ability to work in confined spaces, such as vaults, while wearing the appropriate safety equipment.

Ability to walk up to six miles daily

Ability to lift and carry bulky items weighing up to 70 pounds.

Ability to use a computer to access, interpret and record information

Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing

Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas Driver's License.

An employee will not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the workplace.

Required Experience and Training

One year of customer service experience with demonstrated ability to handle inquiries, communicate effectively and provide support.

One year of experience in general construction and / or plumbing.

Valid Kansas Driver’s license.

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need of a sponsorship.

Preferred Experience and Training

Two years of work experience in the water utility or public works field.

Familiarity with manual and electronic meters to perform accurate inspections and repairs.
