Engineer Position At Argonne National Laboratory
The Energy Systems and Infrastructure Analysis (ESIA) division is seeking to hire an engineer to conduct research on electric power systems planning, operations, and control. ESIA is a part of the Advanced Energy Technologies directorate of Argonne National Laboratory.
The candidate will apply advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts for conducting research and development in finding solutions for the problems faced by the energy and power sector. The candidate will lead and work on complex technical problems and develop novel and innovative solutions. Technology leadership responsibilities include planning and leading research and development programs that include the development and application of computational simulation tools to evaluate and analyze energy technologies and energy supply and demand systems from the perspective of cost and performance, end-use requirements, environmental impacts, and socioeconomic issues. The candidate will also create, develop, and sustain research programs and attract funding in these areas. The candidate will recruit, mentor, and train the next generation workforce while maintaining Argonne's core values, including impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
Position Requirements
- Knowledge of electric power systems, electricity markets, and issues related to the integration of variable renewables, energy storage, distributed energy resources, and demand-side technologies.
- Demonstrated knowledge of power systems planning, operations and control, and transmission and distribution systems.
- Problem-solving skills and a passion for innovative solutions. Experience with computational approaches to solve electric power system problems.
- Experience with power system modeling and simulation tools, such as PSSE, PSLF, EMTP / ATP, CYME, OpenDSS, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, MATLAB / Simulink, etc.
- Proven leadership and project management experience. Ability to create, develop and sustain research programs with experience in attracting and managing sponsor funding for complex multidisciplinary research operations.
- Experience working and collaborating with the electric power industry organizations such as electric utilities, electricity market operators, etc.
- Experience working with various sponsoring agencies, such as U.S. Department of Energy, and with the private sector.
- Experience of working in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment. Ability to work with other groups and divisions within Argonne and with external partners such as other national labs, universities, and industry.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities in recruiting and mentoring junior-level staff.
- Effective communication skills, verbal and written, and ability to interact with Argonne's leadership and project sponsors.
- Ability to model Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
- Ability to make our laboratory a safe, welcoming, inclusive, and accessible environment where all can thrive.
This position can be hired at one of two levels; the selected candidate will be placed at the appropriate level (RD4 or RD5) dependent upon the depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills. The minimum requirements for the two levels are as follows :
RD4 : Bachelors and 12+ years of experience, Masters and 7+ years, PhD and 6+ years, or equivalent.
RD5 : Bachelors and 15+ years of experience, Masters and 12+ years, PhD and 10+ years, or equivalent.
The expected hiring range for this position is $130,467.00 - $208,431.99.
