JOB SUMMARY :
Under the close supervision of the HVAC and Mechanical Services Manager, the HVAC Technician Apprentice receives on-the-job training for the day-to-day operations and maintenance of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, as well as other mechanical systems within a building or facility. The HVAC equipment you will be servicing includes but is not limited to large and small rooftop units, split systems, chillers, and boilers. Does other related duties.
JOB REQUIREMENTS : The HVAC Apprentice Mechanic will be responsible for learning and mastering various skills related to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Including the maintenance of all low-pressure boilers, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, motors, generators, chemical feeders, air handlers, fan coil units, valves, and other related or auxiliary equipment used for heating and air conditioning systems.
Learns how to operate and maintain Building Management Systems (BMS) for temperature controls for HVAC Systems and equipment. Learning how to run these systems efficiently and safely, addressing malfunctions and performing routine maintenance.
Learns how to make repairs and adjustments to heating and air conditioning equipment. This includes tasks like operating and monitoring HVAC equipment, performing preventive maintenance (cleaning filters, inspecting equipment, etc.), and troubleshooting issues. Supporting on-call or emergency response situations, as needed for ensuring optimal comfort and energy efficiency.
Learns to diagnose and repair problems with HVAC systems, that require knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems. Learns to identify and resolve issues with HVAC systems, including electrical and plumbing components. This includes adjusting air conditioning units, checking exhaust and supply fans, and ensuring proper ventilation.
The HVAC equipment you will be servicing includes but is not limited to large and small rooftop units, split systems, chillers, and boilers.
The apprenticeship role may involve physical activities such as lifting, climbing, and working in various environments. This position has working conditions that may expose you to various weather conditions and require you to work outside normal working hours including evening, weekends, and holidays.
EXPERIENCE : Candidate must have some HVAC training and / or experience including mechanical knowledge and the ability to work on various HVAC equipment. Experience in building maintenance or related fields is desirable.
LICENSE AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS :
1.Appointees are required to possess a clean valid driver's license in New Jersey to perform in essential duties of the position.
2.Appointees will be required to attend and complete the Technician Apprentice Program for HVAC.
3.Appointees will be required to obtain the NJ Blue Seal Refrigeration License in the required categories.
4.Appointees will be required to obtain a valid Air Conditioning and Refrigeration Technician Certification issued under the authority of the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA 608 Universal Certification).
5.NJCU will cover the cost for the above-mentioned training and licensing requirements, provided the individual hired agrees to and signs the “Training Repayment Agreement Provision”.
ADVANCEMENT :
Appointee’s work performance will be reviewed and rated semi-annually during each twelve (12) month periods of the two (2) year apprenticeship program.Upon successful completion of the twenty-four (24) month apprenticeship program, and the attainment of the above license and education requirements within the training period, appointees will be eligible for advancement to the title of Operating Engineer, Heating and Air Conditioning in accordance with N.J.A.C. 4A : 3-3.7 et seq .
NOTE : The inability of an appointee in the apprentice title to successfully complete the required training period and to obtain the required blue seal license shall be considered cause for separation.
