Description

Glendale Community College seeks individuals who are equity-minded leaders, committed to student success and closing equity gaps, to apply for its Full-Time Disabled Students Programs and Services (DSPS) Counselor position. This is a full-time, tenure track, 10 month-per-year DSPS Counselor assignment in the Disabled Students Programs and Services Division. Counseling faculty work thirty-five hours per week. Members of the full-time faculty are expected to devote as much time as necessary to perform the professional responsibilities of the position. Participation in professional activities, curriculum development, and campus committees is expected. The assignment may include onsite, online and hybrid and evening and / or Saturday hours.

The DSPS Counselor will provide specialized academic, vocational / career and personal counseling services to a heterogeneous caseload of adult students with disabilities. Additional responsibilities include : community recruitment, advisement, instruction, and development of student educational plans. The DSPS Counselor will be assigned to work in the Center for Students with Disabilities.

Start Date :  Fall 2025

Examples of Duties

Provide specialized educational, career and personal counseling support and referrals for a diverse caseload of students with disabilities regarding goal completion, basic skills, probation, financial assistance, and how to succeed in college.

Maintain records and students' educational plans and contracts.

Assist in the collection and analysis of relevant educational / functional limitations social, personal and vocational information for each student.

Performs a variety of counseling functions and activities pertaining to the operation of the Program.

Provides educational, career, and personal counseling support and referrals for a diverse student body regarding goal completion, basic skills, probation, financial assistance and how to succeed in college.

Implements services to meet the needs of students including online, drop-in, group and learning community counseling.

Assists students in interpreting certificate, associate degree, and transfer-related requirements in written and computerized format.

Assists students in assessing, planning, and implementing their immediate and long-range goals.

Assists students in assessing their aptitudes, abilities, and interests and advising them regarding current and future employment trends.

Develops and teaches a variety of Student Development courses online and / or in classroom and workshops such as Orientation, Advisement, Career Planning, Goal Selection, Study Skills, Test Taking Techniques, and Note-Taking.

Conducts group counseling sessions for a variety of student populations.

Contributes to innovation in counseling services by working with instructional faculty to design student success programs and / or services.

Embedded liaison to instructional academic disciplines as directed by the Division Chair of Student Services.

Participates in assessing Student Learning Outcomes, Program Learning Outcomes, and Program Reviews.

Keep accurate and appropriate records in accordance with the district and departmental policies and procedures.

Participate in campus governance and professional activities (, committees, scheduling, leadership positions, faculty meetings, etc.).

Participate in staff development and continuing education activities that are designed to maintain and develop currency in the field, pedagogy (for traditional and online teaching and learning), and student support strategies, especially as they relate to student equity initiatives.

Work to achieve the college's Institutional, Program, and Student Learning Outcomes in support of Glendale Community College's Mission Statement.

Maintain regular posted office hours and be accessible to students.

Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all employees and others encountered in the course of work.

Demonstrate a sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Performs other counseling-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent in rehabilitation counseling OR

Master's degree in special education, AND 24 or more semester units in upper division or graduate level course work in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, or social work;

OR

Master's degree in counseling, guidance, student personnel, psychology, career development, or social welfare; AND either Twelve or more semester units in upper division or graduate level coursework, specifically in counseling or rehabilitation of individuals with disabilities;

OR

Two years of full-time experience, or the equivalent, in one or more of the following : counseling or guidance for students with disabilities or counseling and / or guidance in industry, government, public agency, military or private social welfare organizations n which the responsibilities of the position were predominantly or exclusively for persons with disabilities.

Desirable Qualifications :

Learning Disability Eligibility Service Model (LDESM) certification.

At least two years of recent experience, within the last three years, counseling individuals with disabilities in a secondary or postsecondary academic setting.

Experience using a learning management system (LMS).

Experience in curriculum development.

Knowledge about or experience working with students who are underrepresented in higher academia, with the goal of reducing equity gaps.

Counseling experience that reflects culturally responsive counseling practices.

Additional Information

Starting salary is from $70,667 to $97,835 per year depending upon education and experience. Step placement within the appropriate column is determined by Article VIII of the Glendale College Guild, Local 2276, Collective Bargaining Agreement. Additionally, information regarding health and welfare benefits may be found in Article XI.

    Travel Reimbursement
