AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM Coding Instructor

Our after school programs provide safe and enriching after school opportunities to young people where they can learn to be productive, build positive adult and peer relationships, and participate in meaningful academic and enrichment activities. BACR provides these programs at approximately 100 schools in the Bay Area. We are looking for candidates with previous experience working with kids with a strong understanding of and passion for the integration of real-life problem solving with computer science and the engineering design process. Experience teaching project-based learning or engineering design challenges highly desired.

Position Title : Coding Instructor

Compensation : $30-$35 per hour DOE

Reports To : BACR Program Coordinator

Commitment : 6- 10 weeks per semester

Work Days / Hours : Monday – Friday 2 : 15 – 6 : 00pm / Except Wednesday 1 : 00 – 5 : 30 pm

Job Duties :

Facilitate and plan a coding curriculum to 4th and 5th grade students twice per week in two school sites.

Work in conjunction with the BACR ASES Site Coordinator, BACR ASES Program Leaders to ensure that program activities are exciting and relevant to youth, as well as organized, diverse, and fun.

Provide support and encouragement when students become frustrated / distracted as well as make sure coding curriculum is accessible to English Learner students.

Actively supervise and ensure student safety at all times and promote a safe and positive classroom environment

Model positive and proactive attitudes, behaviors, and language

Communicate regularly with the coordinator to ensure consistency

Ensure that all school space and technology equipment is left clean and orderly

Maintain appropriate, professional and kid-friendly speech, behavior and attire all times

Meet deadlines with consistency, maintain accurate attendance records and reporting procedures

Apply the with regard to positive youth development and experiential learning ( focus on growth mindset, emphasize learning-by-doing, foster youth-adult partnerships).

Qualifications

Qualifications :

Must enjoy working with children and youth in school settings

Must be creative, patience and proactive

Must be punctual and reliable

Must be able to work every day during after school hours and commit to a full academic school year required for the position

Must have experience working with youth from socio-economically disadvantaged families

Must have general knowledge of coding and unplug computer science curriculum

Must be able to teach coding using Makey-Makey, Spheros, and Little Bits in an engaging way

Must possess strong group and individual behavioral guidance skills

Must be able to work independently and as part of a team

Must be able to communicate openly in a professional manner with students, parents, community partners, and after-school and school day-staff

Must maintain confidentiality and demonstrate a high degree of integrity

An ability to maintain goals and priorities when dealing with varying challenges

Able to be flexible in working with people and groups of differing viewpoints

A strong dedication to youth development

A sense of creativity and enthusiasm

Essential Functions :

Ability to lift and carry 25 pounds

Ability to travel to required meetings and must have a clean driving record and insurance if using personal vehicle

Ability to work with Excel / Microsoft Office and Web based programs

Scratch and other

Ability to perform basic administrative tasks and keep detailed records

Ability to be punctual and reliable

Ability to commit to a full Academic Year

Applicants must meet the above requirements to be considered for any After School Program BACR Coding Instructor position. If selected to be interviewed, you must bring the following items to your interview :

Proof of TB test Clearance

Proof of an Associate Degree or higher, or 48 or more college units, or pass the Instructional Aide exam

A completed BACR Application Form

Proof of COVD vaccine or biweekly negative test
