Description :

We are seeking a Data Scientist with 10+ years of experience to join our onsite team in the Washington, DC area . This role will lead research and innovation for senior clients, applying advanced statistical, machine learning, and AI methods to solve large-scale, complex problems. The successful candidate will own major data science initiatives, mentor junior team members, and shape the organization’s data science capabilities.

This role is contingent upon funding award and requires onsite presence at the USCG St. Elizabeths campus three days per week.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO :

  • Partner with IT, business leaders, software engineers, and data engineers to translate complex business needs into data science solutions.
  • Design, develop, and implement advanced machine learning, statistical, and optimization models to address enterprise-scale challenges.
  • Explore and analyze large, complex datasets to identify trends, build predictive models, and drive actionable insights.
  • Invent new algorithms and approaches for solving data-intensive problems where no standard solutions exist.
  • Define and codify best practices, reusable patterns, and scalable model development processes.
  • Mentor and guide junior data scientists, fostering team development and technical excellence.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders through clear visualizations, reports, and presentations.

Requirements : KEY REQUIREMENTS :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or related field (Master’s or PhD preferred).
  • 10+ years of experience applying data science techniques, including machine learning, artificial intelligence, and advanced statistical modeling.
  • Strong technical background in quantitative and computational sciences.
  • Expertise with core ML frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, XGBoost, TensorFlow, PyTorch, MLlib).
  • Proficiency in programming languages commonly used in data science (Python, R; experience with Scala, C++, or Java a plus).
  • Strong data analysis and visualization skills; ability to design interpretable and actionable outputs for stakeholders.
  • Experience managing end-to-end model development : data preprocessing, feature engineering, training, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Eligible for USCG Public Trust.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Advanced degree (MS / PhD) in a quantitative discipline.
  • Experience with big data tools (Spark, Hadoop, Hive, Kafka) and experiment tracking (MLflow or similar).
  • Track record of defining data science standards, policies, and processes in complex organizations.
  • Experience delivering analytics in government or highly regulated environments.
