Assistant Controller

Exempt

Reports To : Controller

Location : Onsite / Hayward

POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Controller plays a key role in supporting the Controller and directly supervises the accounting team. This position assists with overseeing daily accounting operations and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial data and reporting. With a hands-on approach, the Assistant Controller actively contributes to the execution of day-to-day tasks while also assisting in the development and implementation of internal controls, policies, and procedures to enhance operational efficiency and compliance.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

  • Supports the oversight of all accounting functions, including maintenance of the general ledger, accounts receivable and cash applications, accounts payable, inventory and fixed asset accounting and revenue recognition.
  • Supervises, mentors, and supports the development of accounting staff, including training, performance management, and fostering professional growth.
  • Maintains the monthly close checklist to ensure a timely and efficient month-end, quarter-end and year-end close processes.
  • Reviews and approves month-end close journal entries, ensuring accuracy and appropriate supporting documentation is provided.
  • Coordinates the review and / or assists with the monthly preparation and reconciliation of bank and general ledger accounts.
  • Assists in the timely preparation and publication of periodic financial statements for Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) and management’s review.
  • Assists in developing and documenting business processes and accounting policies to enhance and maintain strong internal controls.
  • Assists with the coordination and completion of external audits.
  • Assists with the research and documentation of technical accounting issues for compliance.
  • Manages, prepares and compiles data in adherence to local, state and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Establishes, manages and collaborates with internal partners towards a robust escheatment process to ensure compliance with applicable state laws and regulations.
  • Assists with the annual budgeting and planning process as requested.
  • Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in accounting and finance preferred.
  • Proven leadership experience with 3–5 years in a supervisory or management role preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of and adherence to GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles).
  • Experience with SOX compliance and Sage Intacct preferred.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting software required.
  • Demonstrated success in managing annual financial audits and tax preparation.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Analytical mindset with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lead and develop teams while demonstrating sound business acumen.

  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS :

    This position requires close visual acuity to perform activities such as : preparing and analyzing data and figures; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; Ability to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction, and making fine discriminations in sound; Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and / or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Must be able to remain in a stationary position and / or upright, for prolonged periods of time, traverse stairs, reach overhead, squat, bend, kneel, stoop, and crouch occasionally during 8-10-hour work shift.

    BASE PAY :

    The listed range is what we reasonably expect to pay for this opportunity at the time of this posting. Actual compensation is based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s experience, education, certifications, knowledge, skills and geography / work location, and may ultimately be more or less than the posted range. Base pay does not include other forms of compensation, such as our offered benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, FSA and 401k plan, holiday, sick and vacation days.
