POSITION DESCRIPTION :

NOAA Fisheries' West Coast Region (WCR) seeks a highly skilled Visual Communications & Information Systems Specialist . This role will lead the design, development, and delivery of high-quality visual communication products and maintain the region's internal and external information systems. The position combines creative design expertise with strong technical skills to ensure NOAA Fisheries' messages are visually compelling, accessible, and aligned with federal standards.

The successful candidate will work closely with communications staff, scientists, and leadership to produce graphics, infographics, fact sheets, signage, and multimedia content, while also ensuring the region's digital platforms and document repositories remain organized, functional, and compliant.

RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Design and produce professional, engaging visual materials (infographics, reports, brochures, signage, presentations) to support WCR priorities.
  • Develop and maintain visual branding guidelines in accordance with NOAA Fisheries and Department of Commerce standards.
  • Create visual assets that effectively communicate complex marine science and policy topics to diverse audiences.
  • Support field offices with layout and production of public-facing materials and event visuals as well as digital content, including social media, newsletters, and online campaigns
  • Manage and update the WCR's online information systems, including intranet pages, digital document repositories, and shared resources.
  • Ensure accessibility, organization, and compliance with federal information management standards.
  • Troubleshoot and coordinate with IT staff to resolve system issues affecting content management and user access.
  • Maintain metadata and version control for key communication products and publications.
  • Participate in coordination meetings and provide status updates on deliverables.
  • Maintain project archives and documentation for future reference and compliance audits.
  • REQUIREMENTS :

  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Information Systems, or related field (or equivalent professional experience).
  • At least 5 years of experience simplifying complex scientific concepts
  • Proven experience producing professional visual materials for public communications.
  • Experience in government, science communication, or environmental / marine fields.
  • Advanced proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop) and other design tools.
  • Familiarity with content management systems, intranet design, and file repository organization.
  • Strong understanding of branding, accessibility standards, and visual storytelling.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Skills in video production, animation, or GIS visualization.
