Utility Engineer 3
ABM Industries is seeking an experienced Utility Engineer 3 to join our facilities engineering team. This senior-level position is responsible for the maintenance, operation, and optimization of critical utility systems in commercial and industrial facilities. The successful candidate will provide technical expertise and leadership in ensuring reliable, efficient, and safe operation of building systems while supporting ABM's commitment to delivering exceptional facility services.
Key Responsibilities
- Utility Systems Management
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot complex utility systems including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire safety, and building automation systems
- Perform preventive maintenance programs on all utility equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability
- Conduct system performance analysis and implement energy efficiency improvements
- Monitor and maintain critical building systems including chillers, boilers, generators, switchgear, and distribution systems
- Technical Leadership & Problem Solving
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and maintenance staff
- Lead complex troubleshooting efforts for utility system failures and emergency situations
- Develop and implement maintenance procedures, work instructions, and safety protocols
- Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and internal teams on major repairs and system upgrades
- Project Management & Planning
- Manage utility infrastructure projects from planning through completion
- Conduct feasibility studies and cost-benefit analyses for system improvements
- Prepare technical specifications, work orders, and project documentation
- Ensure all work complies with local codes, regulations, and safety standards
- Data Analysis & Reporting
- Monitor utility consumption and system performance metrics
- Prepare detailed reports on equipment status, maintenance activities, and system performance
- Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, repairs, and system modifications
- Utilize computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) for work order management
Qualification
Minimum 5-7 years of experience in facilities engineering, utilities management, or related fieldPrevious experience in commercial or industrial facility maintenance preferredTechnical SkillsStrong knowledge of HVAC systems, electrical distribution, plumbing, and building automation systemsProficiency in reading blueprints, schematics, and technical drawingsExperience with energy management systems and utility optimizationKnowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and industry standards (OSHA, NEC, ASHRAE)Certifications & LicensesProfessional Engineering (PE) license preferredRelevant trade certifications (EPA Section 608, electrical license, etc.) highly desirableCurrent CPR / First Aid certification preferredPreferred QualificationsExperience with building automation systems (BAS) and energy management softwareKnowledge of sustainability practices and LEED principlesProject management experience and / or PMP certificationExperience working in healthcare, education, or corporate facility environmentsSkills & CompetenciesStrong analytical and problem-solving abilitiesExcellent communication and interpersonal skillsAbility to work independently and manage multiple prioritiesLeadership skills with ability to mentor and train othersProficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and facility management softwareCommitment to safety and quality standards35 - $35 a day
