Description
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced professional to lead complex acquisitions of high-value archival records and materials of historical significance to the Church. This role involves proactively acquiring records from emeritus Church leaders and families of deceased leaders purchasing rare documents through dealers and auctions and ensuring proper processing and integration into the Churchs historical collection. This position will also serve as a standing member of the departments Acquisition Board offering critical insight into acquisition decisions.
Responsibilities
- Lead Major Acquisitions : Manage some of the departments most significant and complex acquisition efforts including acquiring records from senior Church leaders their families and other key sources.
- Collaborate & Advise : Work both independently and collaboratively. Provide and receive counsel as part of the Acquisitions Board and other working groups.
- Serve as Subject Matter Expert : Provide authoritative insight into Church history and archival best practices to guide acquisition decisions. This includes evaluating the authenticity of archival materials.
- Build Relationships : Cultivate and maintain professional relationships with donors Church leadership records dealers and auction houses. Handle sensitive negotiations with discretion and professionalism.
- Oversee Processing : Direct the full lifecycle of acquired materialsfrom initial appraisal and negotiation through processing cataloging and integration into the collection.
- Supervise Support Staff : Mentor and supervise missionaries and interns supporting your work.
- Share Expertise : Occasionally share the historical value of acquired materials through presentations articles or public outreach.
Qualifications
Masters degree in history archival studies library science or a closely related field.Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in evaluating and acquiring archival records including appraisal negotiation and processing.Deep and comprehensive knowledge of Church history from its founding to the present day.Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact tactfully and effectively with individuals from a variety of backgrounds including senior Church leaders.Excellent oral and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate complex ideas diplomatically and clearly.Proven ability to make sound decisions under pressure resolve sensitive issues and work collaboratively across teams.Expertise in appraising both the monetary and historical value of archival materials.Proficiency in managing acquisition budgets processing payments and navigating legal and tax considerations related to acquisitions.Additional Information
This position requires discretion and the ability to handle high-level and sometimes confidential material. The incumbent in this position will play a key role in preserving the Churchs history and legacy helping ensure future generations have access to vital historical records.
