Summary

The Senate Communications and Public Information Officer is responsible for creating, managing, and distributing digital and media content pertaining to the Arkansas State Senate's public engagement and communication of institutional endeavors. The role is responsible for helping ensure all content and work product aligns with Senate policies, applicable law and protects the integrity of the institution. The role works in coordination with the Bureau of Legislative Research IT staff, manages Senate Communications staff, oversees multimedia content creation and manages social media platforms. The role also includes drafting speeches and press releases as needed and coordinating press relations to help ensure clear and accurate communication with the public and the media. The Senate Communications and Public Information Officer plays a key role in transparency, accessibility, and understanding of the Arkansas Senate.

Functions

Content Creation and Management : Consistently develop and produce high-quality multimedia content, including relevant video, audio, graphics, Senator biographies for the Senate webpage and photography to communicate about the Senate, legislative updates, legislative session recaps, and public information that can be shared with constituents. Additionally, the Senate Communications and Public Information Officer coordinates official photos of Senators, staff and the Senate composite with the Director / Secretary of the Senate.

Press and Media Coordination : Act as a point of contact for media inquiries and help ensure that media interactions align with Senate policies and applicable law. Assist with set-up / coordination of media interviews for Senators within the State Capitol complex or online platforms as requested.

Event Coverage : Attend Senate committee meetings as appropriate to create content and provide timely communication through various channels. Some in-state travel may be required.

Digital Platform Oversight : Manage content on the Senate website and work to keep the information accurate, up-to-date and accessible in alignment with Senate policies and applicable law. Work with the IT team to enhance online platforms and digital accessibility.

Visual and Editorial Standards : Maintain consistent visual and editorial standards in Senate communications, ensuring alignment with the Senate's institutional integrity and tone. Develop visually compelling graphics for various platforms, including social media, website, and newsletters. Maintain a solid knowledge of the latest industry trends and industry best practices.

Collaboration : Work with Senate staff leadership, Senators, and Senate staff to understand and support communication needs. With approval, coordinate with other government agencies as needed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Technical Skills : Proficiency in multimedia content creation and content creation tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Premiere Pro, Photoshop, InDesign, etc.), social media management platforms, and content management systems (CMS). Strong photography and videography skills.

Writing Skills : Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to draft biographies of each Senator; the ability to create clear, concise, and accurate written content tailored for the public.

Public Relations Skills : Experience handling media inquiries, preparing press releases, and managing press relations. Ability to build and maintain professional relationships with media outlets.

Social Media Expertise : In-depth knowledge of major social media platforms

(Twitter / X, Facebook, Instagram) and best practices for government communication.

Adaptability and Organizational Skills : Able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple tasks and deadlines with attention to detail.

Strong Communication Skills : Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to research, analyze, and succinctly summarize and communicate information clearly.

Teamwork and Collaboration : Demonstrate ability to work collaboratively and as a team player with Senate and BLR staff as well as other entities within the government setting.

Minimum Qualifications

Education : Bachelor’s degree in communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Digital Media, or a related field or relevant experience.

Experience : Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in multimedia communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.
