FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description)
- Provide engineering support to a variety of shipboard repair projects at various work sites in compliance with customer quality, schedule, and requirements
- Communicate with and provide engineering support to a variety of trade shops, production work, planning function, or project work when needed
- Prepare and maintain, design studies, proposals, sketches, purchase specifications, engineering calculations, test memos, and other engineering support as directed by the Director of Planning, Engineering and Scheduling with little technical guidance
- Performs in a professional position requiring high level of specialized knowledge and experience
- POSITION DEMANDS (Education / Training)
- Typically has a ABET accredited Bachelor's degree in an Naval Architecture
- PE License is desirable
- FEA Certificate / experience is desirable
POSITION DEMANDS (Required Experience)
5 years shipboard repair experience within a public or private shipyard and / or ship systems operation with a Bachelor's degree preferredFully competent to perform engineering tasks and responsibilities; well-rounded ability in multiple systemsFamiliarity with shipboard equipmentAbility to understand and apply regulatory body rules and regulations, US Navy, and Industry StandardsDemonstrated technical writing skillsEffective decision-maker requiring minimal guidanceDemonstrated AutoCAD skillsDemonstrated Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Power Point, etc.) skillsExperience of US Navy ship maintenance and repair processes and techniques preferredExperience in ship technical problem resolution especially with hull, machinery, and coatings preferredAbility to assess customer technical requirements, analyze technical problems, identify, develop, and apply appropriate solutions utilizing customer technical standardsAbility to communicate both verbally and in writing complex technical issues involving factual, qualitative, or abstract information including concise rationales for conclusions or recommendationsAbility to represent the company's position on various technical matters in a professional and courteous manner; takes ownership and accountability for their engineering responsibilities, possesses indisputable subject matter knowledgeAbility to work aboard marine vessels, climb ladders, work in confined spaces, wear personal protective equipment (PPE), travel locally or when requested by senior management, travel to remote locations, and to work nights and weekends during peak workloads or when requested by Director of Planning, Engineering and SchedulingAbility to gain access to government facilities, to obtain a DoD security clearance, and to obtain a CAC card once employed by the companyAbility to analyze complex problems; researches and synthesizes data; proposes unique solutions and alternatives requiring considerable innovationServes as engineering leader and technical coordinator for projectsLeads, trains, and mentors other engineering personnel in the duties and responsibilities of the departmentAssists in preparing bid and proposal products in accordance with customer requirementsServes as one of the primary points of contacts for customersPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSVisual Requirements : The worker is required to have visual acuity to perform an activity within arm's reach or performing tasks of a non-repetitive nature
WORKING RELATIONSHIPSReports to the Director of Planning, Engineering and Scheduling; Will have no direct reportsMust be able to communicate effectively with various internal and external customers, including high ranking individuals both verbally and in writingAbility to function within the company and oversee engineering projects with minimal oversight and guidanceWill be informed of priorities and allowed to schedule work as necessary to complete required tasks with minimal guidanceAbility to serve as engineering leader and technical coordinator for projectsPRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIESPerform engineering analysis of ship stability and dry dock block loading to support the docking of U.S. Navy vesselsDesign dry dock block arrangement based on U. S. Navy Docking DrawingsPerform detailed mooring arrangements and calculations for ships moored within the shipyard to ensure the requirements of the U.S. Navy Heavy Weather Requirements are satisfied.Prepare line handling drawings for the movement of vessels into and out of the dry dock.Prepare pumping plans for the docking and undocking of vessels.Provide technical guidance to the Dockmaster and Facility Managers for the maintenance and repair of a floating dry dock, and facility infrastructure and equipment.Perform structural and mechanical designs and calculations for both Facilities and Production.Assist Dockmaster with barges, piers, bulkheads, mooring, hull inspections, cofferdam installations, and underwater inspections.Assists Dockmaster to insure NASSCO maintains its MIL STD 1625D (or latest revision) certification of “SPEEDE” dry dockAssist Dockmaster for maintaining drydock in ABS classification.Oversees and supports the Dock Crew with block placement.Assists Dockmaster in determining safe mooring locations for vessels in the shipyard.Engages with consultants, vendors, contractors to troubleshoot and develop scope of work.Provide technical assistance to production trades in the accomplishment of work items; provide resolutions for technical issues and problems; attend meetings, as required, pertaining to engineering and technical issues and present technical positions in a professional and courteous mannerProvide engineering calculations / analysis to support work in planning and execution stagesDevelop drawings / sketches / BOMs using CAD softwareResearch and analyze various shipboard complex problems and propose solutionsProvide assistance to other engineers upon request; functions as checker / approver for engineering itemsEnsure all products developed are in accordance with the company and customer's quality, schedule, and costDemonstrates professional and business skill aptitudeRepresents company on official business, as directed, for engineering mattersOther items as directed by the Director of Planning, Engineering and SchedulingACCOUNTABILITYResponsible for providing engineering support for a variety of shipboard repair projects at various work sites, trade shops, production work, planning function, or project work as directed by the Director of Planning, Engineering and SchedulingResponsible for completing all tasks within schedule, budget and quality commitments; work products are accurate and conform to high standards of qualityGeneral Dynamics NASSCO is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
