Communications Coordinator (#1662)
The Communications Coordinator plays a key role in supporting the District’s communication efforts by preparing and distributing written and digital materials that inform and engage internal and external audiences. This position is responsible for promoting understanding and awareness of District events, programs, and policies through clear, consistent, and professional communication. The incumbent may respond directly to inquiries from the news media, community partners, and the public, ensuring accurate and timely dissemination of information. The Communications Coordinator reports to the Director of Communications and the Superintendent of Schools.
Responsibilities
Content Creation and Media Relations
Write and edit news releases, newsletters, articles, announcements, and informational materials for families, staff, and the public.
Research, draft, and develop content for publications, reports, presentations, and correspondence.
Respond to information requests from the media, community members, and other stakeholders.
Proofread and review materials for accuracy, clarity, and alignment with District communication standards.
Coordinate media events, interviews, and informational meetings.
Assist with planning, promotion, and publicity for special school events and programs.
Support the creation of video content, including script writing and assistance with production.
Take and curate photographs and videos for inclusion in publications, presentations, and digital media.
Digital Communications and Publications
Develop and oversee District website content, structure, training, and management.
Develop, schedule, and manage social media content and engagement across District platforms.
Monitor traditional and social media for articles, posts, and conversations related to the District.
Write and distribute press releases and promotional content highlighting District events and achievements on a weekly basis.
Edit content and oversee design and printing of monthly departmental newsletters (Human Resources, Curriculum & Instruction, Educational Services, Business & Finance).
Manage content, editing, and design of the This is Us! publication on a bi-weekly basis.
Create and oversee printing and distribution of postcards, flyers, and other promotional materials for hiring, special events, and community initiatives.
Update and oversee design and printing of the annual Calendar / Handbook publication.
Manage and respond to inquiries submitted through the District’s online “Contact Us” form.
Community Engagement and Board Relations
Gather and write Student and Staff Honors for Board of Education meetings and prepare accompanying PowerPoint presentations.
Serve as Clerk Pro Tem and provide back-up support for the District Clerk.
Attend and assist with the management of the annual Budget Vote and Capital Project votes.
Crisis and Administrative Communications
Assist the Director of Communications with crisis communications as needed.
Serve as the point of contact for all communications when the Director is out of the office.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills with excellent command of grammar and style.
Knowledge of media relations and public information principles and practices.
Ability to prepare and adapt content for various audiences and communication platforms.
Strong organizational and planning skills with attention to detail and deadlines.
Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with staff, media, and community partners.
Proficiency in digital communication tools; experience with basic design or multimedia concepts preferred.
Discretion, sound judgment, and a professional demeanor.
Qualifications
Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Public Relations, Communications, Media Broadcasting (Writing and Programming), English Communications, or a closely related field.
