Telescope Operator (Hourly)

ACC Astronomy department is looking for a Telescope Operator to help support Astronomical observations using our 11 inch telescopes located at the Round Rock Campus. Successful applicants are expected to host up to 2 observing sessions per month, each 3 to 4 hours long.

Description of Duties and Tasks :

  • Schedule required observing sessions in coordination with astronomy instructors
  • Setting up and operating 11-inch telescopes during evening sessions
  • Supports students to carry out lab-related activities
  • Maintains an inventory of equipment and supplies
  • Monitors weather conditions and safety for participating students

Knowledge :

  • Basic astronomical knowledge
  • Basic knowledge of telescopes and their operations (alignment & tracking)

    • Skills :

  • Previous experience with astronomical telescopes preferred
  • Experience in photography preferred
  • Basic computer skills

    • Required Education :

  • High school diploma or educational equivalent
  • At least one astronomy class (either high school or college level)

    • Physical Requirements :

  • Lifting heavy equipment (more than 50 lbs), moving, and setting up and disassembling equipment

    • Safety :

  • Work safely and follow safety rules. Report unsafe working conditions and behavior. Take reasonable and prudent actions to prevent others from engaging in unsafe practices.

    • Pay Rate : $27.20 / hour
