Education / Certification :

  • Required :
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university
  • Valid Texas teacher certification : Deaf & Hard of Hearing, TASC / TASC-ASL
  • Preferred :
  • Master's Degree in Deaf Education, Educational Administration, Special Education, or related field from an accredited college or university
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience in the field of Deaf Education

Special Knowledge / Skills :

  • Knowledge of curriculum and resources related to working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students
  • Knowledge of special education rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of different communication modalities and manual communication systems used by students who are deaf and hard of hearing (i.e. American Sign Language, Total Communication, pigeon sign language, Visual Phonics)
  • Knowledge of the Special Education eligibility requirements for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students
  • Demonstrated knowledge of reading strategies and differentiated instruction
  • Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) process
  • Ability to analyze, mediate, and synthesize information
  • Excellent communication (oral, written, and ASL), public relations, and interpersonal skills

    • Function

    The Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) Specialist provides a high level of program management support to staff and students of the Regional Day School Program for the Deaf, by providing quality services for students who are deaf & hard of hearing through curriculum development, staff development, program development, parent partnership, and model teaching.

    Reports To : Reponsibilities :

  • Coordinate and monitor the development and implementation of district and specialized curriculum for deaf and hard of hearing students
  • Provide guidance for teachers and staff responsible for educating deaf and hard of hearing students in the development of instructional strategies and developing appropriate IEPs.
  • Serve as a resource for campuses by observing students, modeling effective teaching strategies, developing appropriate IEPs, and attending ARD meetings.
  • Provide feedback to campus administrators and RDSPD coordinator by identifying critical attributes required of teachers in a successful classroom for deaf and hard of hearing.
  • Assist with preparation for Peer Review by the Texas Education Agency and Region 11.
  • Effectively communicates district standard operating procedures for determining eligibility and recommended placement for Deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Facilitate RDSPD staff meetings and PLC groups
  • Conduct staff development for teachers, paraprofessionals, and interpreters for the deaf and hard of hearing in conjunction with the RDSPD Coordinator
  • Assist the RDSPD coordinator with preparing reports and budgets for district, SSA Board, and State
  • Maintain technology and SERS inventory
  • Participate in and support district PD and outside agency workshops for RDSPD / DHH staff and sign language interpreters
  • Stay current on special education rules / regulations and program delivery methods, particularly those around DHH services.
  • Support building administrators around the unique needs of deaf & hard of hearing students.
  • Demonstrate effective classroom strategies and techniques for improving classroom management and students' behavior
  • Provide inclusion support and training for general education teachers who work with deaf and hard of hearing students.
  • Analyze and interpret large volumes of complex and confidential documents for individual students to ensure that the District is in compliance with each student's legally binding Admission, Review, and Dismissal / Individualized Education Program (ARD / IEP) Committee decisions.
  • Coordinate services of federal, state and county agencies in the community to comply with federally required Individual Family Service Plans (IFSP) and Individual Transition Plans (ITP).
  • Coordinate campus preparation for the special education State Performance Plan and district accountability monitoring systems.
  • Assist in recognizing, analyzing, and evaluating components of general and special education to ensure that instruction addresses individual needs of students.
  • Assist RDSPD coordinator in the interview process and hiring recommendations for special education program staff
  • Provide Information to parents pertaining to student's disabilities, which includes, but is not limited to workshops, in-services, sessions, and conference.
