South Mountain Community College (SMCC) reflects the diversity of the surrounding community, a rich mix of rural, urban, and suburban neighborhoods. Many of our students arrive from Phoenix, Laveen, Tempe, Guadalupe, and the surrounding area to attend classes at the main campus or our offsite facility in Guadalupe; we also offer evening courses in Laveen at Betty Fairfax High School.

  • Job Summary

    This position begins Fall 2024

    South Mountain Community College is seeking dual-qualified English and English as a Second Language faculty to work within an award-winning college environment. In this role, you will provide exceptional instruction for students from diverse backgrounds and cultures in all levels of English, English Humanities, and English as a Second Language.

    As an ENG / ENH / ESL faculty, you will create a caring and supportive learning environment, ensuring that students are successful and supported throughout their college experience. You’ll be responsible for advancing the academic life of the college through participation in co-curricular activities, committee assignments, and professional growth. Your work will foster both student and community engagement.

    To be successful in this role, you’ll need excellent communication and organizational skills, as well as proficiency in using a variety of instructional modalities and methods to engage, support, and assess student academic success and maintain accurate records. You’ll be expected to follow all applicable laws, policies, and scholarly best practices to achieve a high-level of excellence within and outside the college classroom.

    Essential Functions

  • Develop instructional materials and curriculum to facilitate learning for students from diverse backgrounds using different instructional strategies, techniques, and modalities.
  • Embrace a proactive approach to meet established deadlines and timelines, ensuring timely delivery and seamless implementation and enhance instruction through continuous evaluation and improvement of teaching and learning.
  • Use innovative technologies and methods focusing on student learning, retention, and achievement to engage students and promote student success.
  • Actively participate in progress-sharing to foster a culture of collaboration, celebration and continuous improvement
  • Advance the academic life of the college by participating in, planning, and facilitating district-wide, campus, and departmental activities including Department meetings, committees, events, and projects to advance the academic life of the college, such as being the faculty lead for student publications and student clubs.
  • Assist colleagues and provide timely responses to problems / requests from students during in-person office hours, virtual office hours, and regular electronic communication
  • Remain current with new trends and developments in the field through attendance at conferences, seminars, workshops and active within the community.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    A Master’s degree or higher and / or a Master's degree plus 18 graduate credits in both ESL and English is required.

    The following disciplines meet the requirements to teach in this field :

    Teaching English as a Second Language, Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, English as a Second Language, English Language Learning, Teaching English as a Foreign Language, Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages AND English, Rhetoric, Composition, Literature, Creative Writing, English Education, or Journalism / New Media Studies

    Desired Qualifications

    A. Five or more years’ experience teaching all levels of English and all levels of English as a Second Language in a community college setting.

    B. Demonstrated expertise creating inclusive teaching and learning experiences designed to foster an authentic learning environment and assess knowledge transfer

    C. Demonstrated expertise using a variety of instructional technologies to enhance instruction, engage all students in the teaching and learning endeavor, maintain accurate records, including experience utilizing a learning management system

    D. Demonstrated community engagement, such as leading department initiatives, college and / or district committees, campus programs, student clubs, high school outreach, and / or community partnerships

    E. Demonstrated commitment to collegiality and collaboration.
