Position Purpose
Assists Director and staff with program implementation, coordination, and evaluation of comprehensive health services for the District focusing on students and school-based employees.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Nursing Program Management
- Assists in supervising and evaluating school nurses and health assistants; provides feedback to the Director.
- Plans and assesses departmental inventory needs.
- Participates in departmental staffing.
- Develops new materials used by the Health Services Department as assigned by the Director; updates material including Health Services Handbook.
- Maintains and updates the Health Services Department website; compiles staff reports.
Instruction & Training
Assists in coordinating and conducting orientation for new school nurses, substitute school nurses, and health assistants.Collaborates with the Director to plan staff development for nurses and health assistants.Certifies staff nurses in various screening procedures.Serves as a resource to school nurses, health assistants, and other employees needing immediate assistance on health-related issues.Nursing Services
Responds to campus employee emergencies (illnesses or injuries by observation and assessment); provides first aid and treatment if necessary.Guides nurses in the identification and referral of student health problems.Reviews physician releases for campus employees to return to work.Completes "Modified Duty Agreements" for campus employees to return to work with medical restrictions not processed through worker's compensation or Human Capital Management.Safety
Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures equipment is in safe operating condition.Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.Handles and disposes of hazardous materials according to established procedures.Supervisory Responsibilities
Assists in selecting, training, supervising, and evaluating school nurses and health assistants; makes recommendations to Director as appropriate.Personal Work Relationships

Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education, as well as District policies and procedures.Knowledge of school health, nursing administration, community medical, and healthcare services.Knowledge of basic first aid and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and the formulation of action plansSkill in talking to others to convey information effectively.Skill in coordinating, planning, organizing, facilitating, and completing projects.Ability to operate standard medical clinic equipment, including automated external defibrillator (AED).Ability to exercise discretion regarding matters of a sensitive or confidential nature.Ability to analyze and prepare documents, reports, and correspondence.Ability to direct and evaluate health services delivery system.Ability to implement policies and procedures.Ability to use software to create spreadsheets, databases, and do word processing.Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written forms, with students, parents, and school personnel.Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work.Travel Requirements
Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.Physical & Mental Demands, Work Hazards
Tools / Equipment Used : Standard office equipment, including computer and peripherals; standard medical clinic equipment including AED; special needs adaptive equipment.Posture : Prolonged sitting and standing; occasional stooping, squatting, kneeling, bending, pushing / pulling, and twisting.Motion : Frequent repetitive hand motions, including keyboarding and use of mouse; occasional reaching.Lifting : Frequent light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may require regular heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, and / or assisting non-ambulatory students.Exerting : May be required to physically restrain students as needed (to prevent unsafe behavior).Environment : Works in an office and / or clinical setting; frequent districtwide travel; exposure to biological hazards, bacteria, communicable diseases, blood, or body fluids; may require occasional irregular and / or prolonged hours.Attendance : Regular and punctual attendance at the worksite is required for this position.Mental Demands : Maintains emotional control under stress; works with frequent interruptions.Minimum Required Qualifications
Education :Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from accredited college or university required;
Master's degree (in Nursing) from accredited college or university preferred.Certification / License :Valid registered nurse (RN) license from the Texas Board of Nursing;
