Appraiser Position

Position Summary

As an experienced and detail-oriented Appraiser, you will have the opportunity to lead and mentor a small team of Appraisers and work with the leadership team to ensure consistency in the appraisal process. You will do site visits and appraisals in the field as well as respond to appeals, conduct quality control, cross train in other areas. The Pierce County Assessor-Treasurer's Office is responsible for the mass appraisal of real and personal property throughout Pierce County, which is the foundation for assessing, calculating, and collecting property taxes. Success comes from being able to work efficiently, make sound daily decisions, and exercise good judgment in a fast-paced environment. Strong organizational skills, the ability to interact professionally with the public (including property owners, business owners, and managers), and the confidence to work independently are essential. You should also be comfortable navigating a variety of computer applications and modern productivity tools. We are also looking for someone who has exceptional customer service and de-escalation skills as well as someone who is aware of their surroundings to identify when things need to be corrected. The Assessor Treasurer's Office is dedicated to your success at becoming adept at appeals, physical inspections, new construction, and other specialized work. You will have additional training / educational opportunities through organizations, such as the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO), the Department of Revenue (DOR), and the Washington State Association of County Assessors (WSACA). Your work will directly impact your community, and it offers a great foundation for future positions within the Assessor Treasurer's Office and Pierce County.

Core daily responsibilities include :

• Responsible for mass appraisal of properties that could include real and / or personal property.
• Select and apply any combination of complex appraisal techniques applicable and necessary to the accuracy and defensible determination of property values.
• Responsible for gathering and verifying land and building characteristic data, including quality of workmanship and materials and its amenities in relation to surrounding properties.
• Conducts property site visits for the purpose of gathering characteristic data and physical verification of business assets.
• Perform extensive research and analysis of sales.
• Gather and analyze income and expense data on income producing properties.
• Accurately record data on field record forms.
• Accurately draw scale plans of buildings using current office software.
• Prepare and present evidence of fair market value for hearings before the County Board of Equalization and State Board of Tax Appeals and may attend hearings to present data documenting the appraisal process; and may testify as a fact and / or expert witness on behalf of the Assessor-Treasurer's Office for administrative and court cases on valuation issues.
• Respond to inquiries from the public regarding appraisal and assessment procedures.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, employees and general public.
• Maintain regular, predictable and punctual attendance during regularly scheduled work hours at assigned worksite.
• Must be able to travel to assigned work locations.
• Perform the physical requirements of the position; work within the established working conditions of the position.
• Work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime.
