The Building Inspector I performs technical work inspecting building construction on-site for compliance with approved plans and applicable city and state codes. Under supervision of the Chief Inspector, this position demonstrates strong time management and self-direction as they perform field inspections of work in progress or completed work, issue notices of violations for non-conformance, and re-inspect when deficiencies are corrected. A "Building Inspector I is sub-classified per trade qualifications as either "Structural", "Electrical", "Plumbing" or "Mechanical". Uncertified Inspectors are required to obtain a minimum of one (1) valid Standard Inspector Certification within their probationary period in an appropriate sub-category from the State of Florida. As an essential employee, a Building Inspector I will be required to perform post-tropical cyclone damage assessment or other special work detail.

The Building Inspector II performs technical work inspecting building construction on-site for compliance with approved plans and applicable city, state, and federal codes. Under supervision of the Chief Inspector, this position demonstrates strong time management and self-direction as they perform field inspections of complex development sites, systems, work in progress or completed work, issue notices of violations for non-conformance, and re-inspect when deficiencies are corrected. A Building Inspector II is sub-classified per trade qualifications as either "Structural", "Electrical", "Plumbing", or "Mechanical". As an essential employee, a Building Inspector II will be required to perform post-tropical cyclone damage assessment or other special work detail. All Inspectors must meet all the education and experience requirements, hold required licensure and certifications, and have additional inspection work experience, all as noted below.

Essential Functions :

• Inspects buildings under construction, alteration, or repair for compliance with applicable city, county, and state code requirements.
• Ensures that materials are installed, and buildings are constructed in substantial compliance with approved plans and specifications.
• Performs inspections on existing buildings for hazardous conditions. If hazardous conditions are identified, issues appropriate notices and follows up to ensure that these conditions are addressed in accordance with applicable codes and regulations.
• Conducts final inspections and issues warnings or stop-work orders when construction does not comply with regulations regarding methods or materials.
• Communicates with and responds to inquiries from members of the public and staff regarding all aspects of applicable code requirements, review and inspection processes, and application comments in a timely and professional manner.
• Prepares accurate and detailed reports and maintains records of work performed.
• Applies appropriate regulations and codes with guidance, as necessary, from the Chief Inspector or Building Official.
• Testifies in court on code violation cases as necessary.
• Investigate complaints and responds to inquiries by taking appropriate action and following up.
• Utilizes related business systems, including software related to inspections, plan review, and communication. Demonstrates ability to learn evolving technologies.
• Participates in division rotation of on-call response for fire-incident inspections as needed.
• Performs related tasks as required.
