Innovation Chemist
The Innovation Chemist is responsible for completing projects based on workflow assigned by R&D Project Manager and / or Director of R&D. Conducts variety of chemical and physical laboratory testing on lab batches, finished goods, prototype formulas and cosmetic raw materials for such purposes as product and process development, product stability, quantitative and qualitative performance analysis. Initiates development process on new products.
- Independently work on formulation projects based on product briefs provided by the Product Development team.
- Adjust and troubleshoot batches as needed to meet formulas specifications, including color matching when required.
- Maintain accurate, real-time records of formulations, procedures, observations, and results, ensuring all data is documented in formulation software (e.g., Coptis).
- Calculate appropriate specification ranges, create Certificates of Analysis (CofAs), and document product specifications.
- Conduct and monitor stability testing on R&D batches, as necessary.
- Research new chemicals and technologies, compile technical data, and evaluate raw material samples for release.
- Prepare and maintain documentation, including OTC files, evaluation sheets, CofAs, labels, and other batch-related records.
- Supervise and oversee pilot batches and first production runs, providing recommendations for process improvement and ensuring adherence to specifications.
- Collaborate with Product Development, Operations, Quality, and Regulatory teams to align on project goals and requirements.
- Contribute to routine laboratory housekeeping and support daily lab operations.
- Train and supervise R&D Chemists, delegate tasks, and provide backup support for Team Leaders as needed.
- Promote a safe working environment by adhering to Environmental Health and Safety procedures, company safety rules, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Assist R&D management with audits and audit preparation.
- Participate in meetings and seminars with sales representatives and vendors to stay informed of industry trends and materials.
- Flexible and willing to perform additional tasks, such as filling lab batches into components or preparing evaluation sheets and labels.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Experience :
Bachelor Science in Chemical Engineering, Organic Chemistry, Chemistry and / or Biochemistry is required. MS or PhD is preferred.
Minimum 8+ yeas’ R&D Chemistry Formulation role in Consumer Products; preferably in Color Cosmetics and Skin Care process manufacturing or an FDA regulated industry.
Experience in writing functional testing SOP’s following good documentation practices.Extensive knowledge in consumer trends, product innovations and development process.Superior knowledge of product ingredient deck listing and labeling requirements.Superior knowledge of rules and regulation (FDA, CTFA, PCPC) for global formulation.Extensive knowledge in the aspects of Compounding, Production, Regulatory, and Quality.Extensive Formulation experience in developing Skin Care, Color Cosmetics (liquids and Powders), Personal Care, such as natural / clean products, creams, lotions, lotions, emulsions, serums, etc. using reverse engineer method, product duplication, and developing new product innovation is a plus. Experience in OTC product development is a plus.Strong technical foundation of formulated products including emulsions, surfactants, suspensions, structured liquids, and an understanding of material chemistry is preferred.Extensive technical knowledge of chemistry, polymers, colorants, emulsions, surfactants, and other raw materials used in the cosmetic industry.Required advanced reporting, designing and data analytic skills. Strong math skills : addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
