Primary Health Care (PHC) was founded in 1981 by Dr. Bery Engebretsen in Des Moines, IA. Our mission has remained unchanged since that time, to provide healthcare and supportive services to all, regardless of insurance, immigration status, or ability to pay.
Based on the needs of the communities we serve, PHC offers a spectrum of medical and dental services including family practice, behavioral health, HIV care and services, and pharmacy. PHC’s Homeless Support Services is the entry point for serving people experiencing homelessness in Polk County. Enabling services are available to help patients with benefits enrollment, case management, transportation, translation, and patient education. We currently have locations in Ames, Des Moines, & Marshalltown.
About the Role :
The Dental Director will lead and oversee the dental services at four PHC Dental locations, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered oral health care. This role is pivotal in developing clinical protocols, managing dental providers, and integrating dental services within the broader health care system to improve patient outcomes. The Dental Director will collaborate with administrative and clinical teams to implement strategic initiatives that enhance service efficiency and compliance with regulatory standards. They will also be responsible for fostering a culture of continuous improvement, professional development, and patient safety within the dental department. Ultimately, this position aims to elevate the standard of dental care provided while supporting the clinic’s mission to serve the community effectively and compassionately.
The Dental Director may be located out of Ames, Des Moines, or Marshalltown, with travel required, as needed, to all PHC Dental locations. This position will be in clinic four days per week and one day per week will be dedicated to administrative responsibilities.

The Dental Director will utilize clinical expertise and leadership skills daily to guide and support the dental team in delivering exceptional patient care. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for collaborating with diverse healthcare professionals and engaging with patients and community partners. Analytical skills will be applied to assess clinical outcomes, operational data, and patient satisfaction to drive continuous improvement. Organizational and management skills are critical for overseeing department operations, budgeting, and staff development. Additionally, proficiency with health information technology will facilitate efficient documentation, reporting, and integration of dental services within the broader health system.

Preferred
Prefer experience with another FQHC or agency with a similar public health focus, though not required.
