FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
The Department of Exercise Science and Recreation invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant professorship beginning Spring idates must have an active record of research / scholarship / creative works, and a strong commitment to teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses in exercise science and human performance and fitness, engage in research / scholarship and professional organization, advise students, provide service to the department, college, university, and community, and other assignments normally associated with a full-time tenure-track academic appointment. Evening teaching will be required. The Assistant will report directly to the chair of the department of Exercise Science and Recreation.
Essential Duties and responsibilities :
The Lehman College campus is located in the Bronx, New York and is a Senior College within the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Lehman is the only four-year public college in the Bronx and is recognized as a Hispanic-serving Institution. The college serves mainly
undergraduate students preparing them for employment, the professions and further study. The Department of Exercise Science and Recreation provides education for Exercise Science, Recreation Education, and Therapeutic Recreation students at the undergraduate and at the graduate level Masters in Human Performance and Fitness. The teaching load is 18 credit hours over a 9-month appointment. Student advisement is required, (minimum of 3 hours per week during the academic year). Attendance at staff development opportunities, as well as
participation in department and school-wide meetings, is expected. The qualified candidate must perform additional service to the College, University, and community. Undergraduate scholar mentorship is encouraged. Opportunities are available for faculty development and
travel awards. Lehman College and CUNY internal funding is available through competitive grants for scholarship and professional development support.
The Exercise Science Program anticipates accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). The Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science program offers three tracks : Exercise and Movement Science, Pre-physical
Therapy, and Pre-Occupational Therapy. The Department of Exercise Science and Recreation also offers the MS in Human Performance and Fitness and more recently was approved for a PhD in Human Performance and Fitness. The Exercise Science Program utilizes the Human
Performance Laboratory with its state-of-the-art equipment with access to additional resources located in the APEX facility to include fitness and weight training centers.
The Department of Exercise Science and Recreation is currently housed in the School of Health Sciences, Human Services and Nursing (HS2N). The School of Health Sciences, Human Services and Nursing currently includes six departments : Exercise Science and
Recreation; Health Promotion and Nutrition Sciences; Health Equity, Administration & Technology; Social Work; Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences, and Nursing. The school is also home to the CUNY Institute for Health Equity. Departments in the School actively
engage with community and government partners to support evidence-based practices and health equity, with a special emphasis on urban populations. The faculty are also strongly committed to high quality teaching and preparation of ethical and skilled health and human
service professionals.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ph.D. degrees in Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, or related area is required on commencement of the appointment. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarships or achievement, active involvement in professional organizations
related to the area of expertise.
Preferred Qualifications :
Involvement or certified with ACSM and / or NSCA
Experience and / or Skills Required :
Primary responsibilities : Teaching and scholarship in areas of expertise across exercise physiology and testing and prescription, conducting metabolic tests such as VO2max and EKG at the undergraduate and graduate level. Additional responsibilities include academic and research advising and service to the University, College, and Community.
Desired areas of expertise : Candidates should have experience and ability to teach in the areas of exercise science, including such course topics as exercise physiology, testing and prescription, kinesiology and biomechanics, strength and conditioning as well as the ability to supervise both undergraduate and graduate-level capstone requirements (e.g. internships, capstones, theses, and other culminating experiences).
