OBJECTIVE

To assist with programs and activities of the Public Policy & Commodity Division (PPCD).

Note : This position will be 20 hours per week.

RESPONSIBILITIES

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS :

Reports to : Conservation and Regulatory Relations Specialist

Supervises : None

Staff Relationships : PPCD staff and administrative staff; MFB Regional Managers, other Michigan Farm Bureau Divisions and Centers and Legal Department.

Other Relationships : County Farm Bureau Administrative Managers, Presidents and volunteer leaders; Farm Bureau Members; Farm Bureau Insurance Agents and Staff; Michigan State University Faculty and Staff; Michigan Agricultural and Commodity Organizations; other state Farm Bureau staff; Members of the Michigan Legislature and staff; State Departments staff.

  • ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

    Assist PPCD staff and Regional Managers as needed with planning local District Policy Development meetings and provide on-site assistance. Explore and develop recommendations for utilizing online and other communication tools for engaging members in policy discussion. Assist staff in entering participant data into the organization’s database.

    Assist PPCD departments with planning Advisory / Task Force meetings and provide on-site assistance. Assist staff in entering participant data into the organization’s database.

    Assist PPCD staff with efforts for ongoing or new programs / issues across the Division such as, but not limited to : the value of membership based on legislative / regulatory success, Michigan Manure Hauler Certification Program promotion, Political Action Program Support, environmental permitting program impacts, and more. This may include specific project(s) for the intern to complete.

    Assist with reviewing material related to policy, legislation, and politics on Michigan Farm Bureau’s Website and offer recommendations for improvements.

    OTHER FUNCTIONS :

    Willing to travel and assist with events and programs throughout the state with use of company fleet vehicle (if available) or mileage reimbursement of personal vehicle.

    Assist legislative counsels with member engagement opportunities at the state Capitol on key legislative issues.

    Process and distribute communication, attend company functions, and complete other responsibilities in the Public Policy & Commodity Division as assigned.

    Assist with member inquiries.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Education : Must be currently enrolled at a college or university and have declared a major course of study moving closer to (or working toward) graduation.

    Experience : Office experience preferred. Interest and experience with policy, politics and legislative process, legislative / historical research, and agriculture.
