Temporary Maintenance Worker
The city is hiring four temporary maintenance workers to work full-time for a 4 month period. The positions will perform work in the city's stormwater or streets divisions.
Under the general supervision of a Public Works Supervisor and at direction of the Lead Maintenance Worker, this position functions as a crew member, performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks supporting the operation, maintenance, and repair of the city's storm drainage systems. The position involves the operation of maintenance and construction tools and equipment to perform a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. Work will be completed in a manner that ensures individual, co-worker, and public safety and is performed in all weather and working conditions.
Essential Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
- Operate maintenance equipment and power tools such as small tractors, rotary brush trimmer, weed trimmer, mowers, edgers and blowers, and maintain hand tools and assigned equipment in good working order.
- Maintain swales and open ditches as required to maintain good system operation.
- Maintain City rights-of-way and easements including mowing, blowing, edging, raking leaves, trimming, weeding, and removing trash.
- Assist with repair of potholes, patching, and sealing of pavement cracks.
- Perform vegetation control duties in public rights-of-way, including flower beds / baskets, landscape beds and other grass areas.
- Remove vegetation from storm water facilities, swales, etc.
- Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner, provide information within the area of assignment, or forward to supervisor in efficient and timely manner.
- Maintain daily log of completed work.
- Operate and maintain an assigned vehicle including fuel, oil and notification of repairs as needed.
- Follow / adhere to all city policies and procedures, and safety program regulations and requirements.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
Knowledge of :

Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.Operate and maintain various hand and power tools, shovel, rake, and post hole digger.Walk behind mower, operate edger, weed eater, small riding mowers, chain saws, and tree pruners.Operate a variety of vehicles and power equipment safely.Operate equipment safely, and in conformance with applicable laws and regulations.Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often in foul weather conditions.Understand and carry out written and oral instructions.Establish and maintain effective working relationships among co-workers and other City personnel, contractors, and the public.Gauge work progress and adjust meet deadlines.Communicate clearly and courteously with the public, co-workers, and city personnel.Work as a team member and resolve conflicts effectively.Perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Experience, Education and Other Requirements
Must be at least 18 years of age.Possession of a valid driver's license.Experience in manual labor / maintenance / grounds keeping preferred.Experience pulling and loading trailers preferred.Must successfully pass all phases of the pre-employment hiring process, including but not limited to, reference checks, and a criminal background check.Note : Any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job will be considered.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, bend, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects, tools or controls. The position requires mobility. Many duties are physically demanding. May be required to lift heavy objects and materials in excess of 50 pounds. Activity and types of duties performed require manual dexterity and coordination. Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions. Employees risk physical hazard from heavy equipment, traffic, and dirt / dust, fumes, chemicals, etc.
