The Opportunity :

The Northern Illinois Food Bank seeks an extraordinarily motivated candidate to join our team as a Part Time - CDL B Driver . Our Class B Drivers play a crucial role for the safe, professional, and timely pick-up and delivery of food and related products. This role ensures efficient transportation and distribution while upholding high standards of customer service and safety. The CDL B Driver maintains assigned fleet vehicles in accordance with cost-effective guidelines, ensuring reliability and compliance with all safety regulations. Additionally, the role focuses on maximizing the distribution of food and other products by following established policies and procedures, supporting the organization's mission to provide essential resources to the community.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Mobile Pantry CDL B Driver plays a vital role in Northern Illinois Food Bank's Mobile Pantry Program, a key initiative aimed at delivering food directly to underserved communities. This traveling food pantry provides nutritious food to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity, particularly in areas where food assistance agencies are unavailable or where residents lack transportation. Operating a 35-foot truck equipped with refrigerated bays for fresh and frozen food, the Mobile Pantry CDL B Driver ensures food is safely transported and distributed at designated locations. Clients can select food directly from the truck, making this service particularly beneficial for food pantries that lack adequate storage facilities for large quantities of food.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Act and drive professionally and safely, following all Illinois Highway Department Rules and Guidelines, all Food Bank operating policies and procedures, and any other law that may apply.
  • Conduct safety and maintenance inspections of truck(s) and trailer(s) before departure each day and report any issues to the Supervisor.
  • Maintain assigned vehicles in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Provide loading / unloading of trucks and trailers as required.
  • Handle the creation and submission of required paperwork, including maintaining a Driver's Daily Log, Vehicle Trip Reports, and any other reports specified by Food Bank management.
  • Contact the Senior Program Manager should any programmatic issues arise.
  • Adhere to food safety standards established by Northern Illinois Food Bank, as outlined by Feeding America and in accordance with AIB accreditation, including completing all applicable training.
  • Arrive on time for scheduled shifts and provide advance notice of any potential absences.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned or required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 21 years of age or older, with a valid CDL B Driver's License and DOT Medical Card.
  • 2+ years of driving experience with a clean driving record.
  • Knowledge of truck maintenance.
  • Able to be certified on powered industrial lift trucks.
  • Ability to receive and follow instructions, with strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to read and write in English, and perform simple mathematical calculations as needed.
  • ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

  • The starting pay range for this position is $15.31 / hr - $18.47 / hr, based on skills and experience.
  • This position's working schedule is within Monday through Friday, 8 : 00 a.m. to 4 : 00 p.m. Flexibility in schedule to include weekends and holidays may be required.
  • This position is based out of our West Suburban Center (Geneva) location, with local travel required.
