Summary :

The ECMO Coordinator is a specialized clinical role responsible for the comprehensive coordination and management of the Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) program. This position plays a vital role in ensuring the safe, effective, and evidence-based care of patients receiving ECMO support. The ECMO Coordinator serves as a key resource, educator, and consultant for all members of the multidisciplinary ECMO team. This includes patient assessments, treatment plan development, equipment management, staff education, protocol maintenance, and quality improvement initiatives.

Bachelor's degree in Nursing, Respiratory Therapy, or related healthcare field

Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - American Heart Association, Basic Life Support CPR for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) - American Heart Association, Or - , Registered Nurse (RN) license - Arkansas or Compact State, Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC)

Description :

1. Patient Care Coordination :

  • Coordinates all aspects of ECMO care from patient selection to decannulation, working closely with attending physicians, surgeons, perfusionists, respiratory therapists, nurses, and other members of the care team.
  • Conducts comprehensive patient assessments, monitoring hemodynamic and respiratory parameters, and identifying potential complications.
  • Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team in developing and implementing individualized ECMO treatment plans.
  • Ensures timely documentation of ECMO-related procedures, monitoring data, and patient outcomes.
  • Facilitates seamless transitions of care during handoffs and transfers.

2. ECMO Program Management :

  • Develops, implements, and maintains ECMO-related policies, procedures, and protocols in accordance with best practices and national guidelines.
  • Ensures adherence to hospital and regulatory standards related to ECMO care.
  • Oversees the maintenance, functionality, and availability of ECMO equipment and supplies.
  • Manages the ECMO database, tracking patient outcomes, complications, and program performance.
  • Participates in the development and implementation of quality improvement initiatives for the ECMO program.

    • 3. Education and Training :

  • Develops and delivers comprehensive education and training programs for all members of the multidisciplinary ECMO team.
  • Provides ongoing support and mentorship to staff regarding ECMO management.
  • Ensures staff competency in ECMO operation, troubleshooting, and patient care.
  • Maintains a current knowledge base of ECMO technology, techniques, and best practices through continuing education and professional development.

    • 4. Communication and Collaboration :

  • Serves as a central point of contact for all ECMO-related inquiries.
  • Facilitates effective communication and collaboration among team members.
  • Presents ECMO-related data and updates to relevant committees and stakeholders.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary meetings and case conferences.
  • Represents the ECMO program within the hospital and at external conferences.

    • 5. Research and Development :

  • Contributes to and supports ECMO-related research initiatives.
  • Stays abreast of current research and emerging trends in ECMO therapy.
  • Works with the team to implement new and innovative approaches to ECMO care.
