The City of Norfolk's Department of Human Services Maintenance Worker I performs general maintenance functions such as locating and repairing roof leaks, repairing housekeeping equipment, repairing and replacing door locks and performing plumbing repairs. Loads, unloads, lifts, and carries heavy construction materials, equipment, and tools. Drives various city vehicles to pick up and deliver a variety of supplies. Cleans the interior of facilities. Performs facility maintenance. Maintains the exterior of facilities. Builds, repairs and cleans storm drains. Supports special events. Maintains equipment and facilities. Provides administrative support. Maintains and repairs asphalt. Repairs and finishes concrete. Maintains meters.
Department Hiring Salary Range : $40,688 - $66,321
Essential functions include but are not limited to :
Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency. No experience required. Preferred : One year of experience as a building helper, maintenance worker or custodian.
Working hours : Monday-Friday 8 : 30am-5 : 00pm

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction. If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction. The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply.
