Authorization Clerk Position Summary
The Authorization Support Clerk will be will be primarily responsible for requesting, tracking, and ensuring receipt of clinical documentation required to support authorization requests for scheduled exams. The position encounters high volumes of protected health information and must be carried out with minimal error. This specialized position will act as a support to our Authorization team members in order to meet the needs of our patients and referring physician offices. This is an administrative position, requiring an individual who is detail-oriented, analytical, focused, service oriented, and responsive with a willingness to help. This individual is one who has consistently demonstrated exemplary performance in-line with SMIL’s Performance Standards in the areas of : Attendance, Quality, Productivity, Customer Service, Teamwork, Job Knowledge, Communication, Problem Solving, Initiative & Energy as well as adherence to Workplace Guidelines.
Authorization Clerk Detailed Responsibilities
- Contacts patients and referring physicians as needed via phone, fax, or other means to secure required additional information.
- Ensures clinical documentation to support authorization approval is obtained in a timely manner and follows up as needed to confirm receipt.
- Resolve internal and external customer inquiries in a timely manner with moderate supervision. Inquiries may be received via inbound call queue, email, or instant message.
- Use appropriate patient search criteria when attempting to locate patient records to attach documents.
- Scan paperwork as needed into patient accounts.
- Adheres to STAT Request Protocol.
- Identifies and reports issues or trends impacting ability to obtain authorization in a timely and efficient manner to the Department Supervisor.
- Provides data entry support to update RIS system with authorization approval numbers or other updates.
- Comply with performance standards and departmental goals.
- Maintains HIPAA compliance.
- Uphold all SMIL policies and procedures.
- Other duties as deemed necessary.

Education and Experience
High School Diploma or Equivalent.1+ years of computer data entry required.Radiology / Medical Industry related Certification is a plus, but not required.Physical Requirements
